Israel-Hamas deal

Hamas and Israel confirm that four bodies of Israeli captives will be handed over later tonight under the Gaza ceasefire deal. According to Palestinian sources the release of 445 Palestinian prisoners is scheduled to occur at the same time. This is as Hamas has earlier stated that the release of Israeli captives would be in exchange for over 600 Palestinian prisoners, including an additional 23 women and children on Thursday. Israel previously suspended the release of the seventh batch of Palestinian prisoners due to what it described as Hamas’ provocative actions during captives’ release. Hamas condemned Israel’s decision, calling it a violation of the ceasefire agreement.

Gaza war 'spillover'

The head of the UN agency for the Palestinian refugees has expressed grave concern over the situation in the occupied west bank, saying the territory is facing “an alarming spillover” of the Gaza war. Philippe Lazzarini made the remark in a social media post. The UN official described the west bank as a battlefield where civilians are the main victims. He said over 50 Palestinians have been killed across the territory since the Israeli raids began Five weeks ago. Lazzarini also said over 40,000 people have been forced to flee their homes amid restricted access to healthcare and humanitarian aid. That, as Israel’s bill to ban UNRWA, which was passed last October, has severely impacted the organization’s life-saving work in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

US police racism

A new study reveals an alarming rise in fatal US police encounters, disproportionately targeting Black and Latino communities, and highlighting deep-rooted racial issues within the country. According to a mapping initiative, the number of deadly police encounters hit a decade-high in 2024. Campaign Zero's data shows more than 1,300 people were killed by US law enforcement last year. The report showed that Black and Latino residents were disproportionately affected both nationally and locally in 2024. In Chicago, Black residents were over 30 times more likely to be killed than white residents. In Saint. Louis, the rate was over 10 times higher. The rise in targeting of Black and Latino communities comes as momentum for police reform has waned.
