Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has decried recent Israeli airstrikes in southern Syria as a “provocative and reckless escalation.”
In a statement released on Wednesday, Aboul Gheit called the strikes a “reckless provocation and an escalation aimed at taking advantage of Syria’s transition to impose an illegal and illegitimate reality.”
“Israel’s occupation of any Syrian land is a violation of international law,” he added.
Aboul Gheit called on the international community to take a clear stance against the “unjustified aggression, which seeks to ignite regional tensions.”
He reaffirmed the Arab League’s solidarity with the Syrian nation in the face of Israeli attacks and “blatant attempts to sow discord.”
The regime's warplanes carried out multiple aerial raids on military targets across southern Syria.
Israeli minister for military affairs Israel Katz confirmed the recent assaults hit military installations in the town of Kiswah, south of Damascus, as well as some sites in Dera’a.
The new attack came after Israeli prime minister Netanyahu pressed for “complete demilitarization” of southern Syria, including the provinces of Quneitra, Dara’a, and Sweida.
Israeli forces have already entered the United Nations-demarcated buffer zone between Syria and the occupied Palestinian territories in the occupied Golan Heights in a move that was condemned by the UN.
Foreign-backed militants overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria amid the Israeli escalation that was targeting the country’s defensive and civilian infrastructures, setting up their own administration.
Syria’s de-facto new rulers have repeatedly said that Damascus “will not engage” in a conflict with Tel Aviv.
In the aftermath of the Tuesday airstrikes, however, Syria’s new authorities condemned the Israeli aggression, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from the country’s territory.
