France protests

In France, Yellow Vest demonstrators are gathering for the twentieth consecutive weekend to protest against President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies. The French government is under fire for the use of excessive force to quell the protests.

US Russia warning

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says it is prepared to channel humanitarian aid to Venezuela in two weeks’ time. The Head of the IFRC made the remarks during a press conference in Venezuela’s capital Caracas. According to Francesco Rocca, nearly 650,000 Venezuelans will receive help in the first phase. Rocca said the first supplies will include medical equipment, surgical kits and power generators. He noted that it is not acceptable for children to die from prolonged power outages in the South American nation. Meanwhile, the US has threatened sanctions in response to the presence of Russian troops in Venezuela.

Anti-Israeli protests

Israeli forces kill two Palestinians in the Gaza Strip during a massive demonstration on the anniversary of the start of the Great March of Return rallies. Over a hundred people have also been injured in Saturday’s protest. Tens of thousands of Gazans have gathered along the so-called buffer zone in the east of the enclave to mark a year since they launched their weekly anti-Israeli protests. The protest campaign started on March 30 last year to demand an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Protesters are also demanding the right of return for millions of Palestinian refugees. Nearly 260 people, including paramedics, have been killed by Israeli forces since the start of the peaceful protests.

Afghanistan floods

Flash floods have killed at least 35 people in western and northern parts of Afghanistan. Seven provinces have been hit by lashing rains that started on Thursday. Flooding killed at least 12 people in the northern province of Faryab and claimed 10 lives in the western province of Herat. Officials said access to remote areas has been cut off and scores of people have been reported missing. Flooding also destroyed thousands of houses and damaged vast areas of farmland. People in western Afghanistan were hit harder by the heavy rains as hundreds of thousands of people are displaced by last year's severe drought.

Ukraine fighting

The Ukrainian army says one of its troops has been killed during clashes with pro-Russian forces in the east. In a statement, the army said the situation had escalated significantly since Friday. It added that four other soldiers were wounded in attacks that saw the use of weapons banned by peace agreements. The flare-up of violence comes a day before the country’s presidential elections. Ukraine has been witnessing relative calm in the past months. The government in Kiev, however, accuses Russia of worsening tensions by arming and supporting the militants in the country’s restive east. Moscow denies the allegations.
