Saudi arms sale ban

Germany has extended by six months an embargo on arms exports to Saudi Arabia. The ban was first introduced in October 2018 in response to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Germany also urged France and Britain to ensure that any jointly-built weapons systems delivered to Riyadh would not be used in the war on Yemen. Separately, the US called for an investigation into this week’s bombing of a Save the Children hospital in Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition. The US statement comes as Washington is supplying Saudi Arabia and its allies with weapons, ammunition and warplanes.

NZ remembrance service

New Zealand holds a national remembrance service for victims of two mosque attacks in the city of Christchurch. The event drew tens of thousands of people including representatives from fifty-nine countries. Addressing the crowd, the New Zealand’s prime minister said the rampage was not only an attack on the Muslim community but an assault on all New Zealanders. Jacinda Ardern underlined that her country will never welcome racism, violence and extremism.

Venezuela Guaido ban

The Venezuelan government says it has barred opposition leader Juan Guaido from holding public office for 15 years. Amoroso said Guaido has falsified information in his national sworn statement and committed irregularities in his financial records. The announcement shows that the row is raging on between the government and the opposition, which has the backing of the United States and many other Western countries. Guaido has responded to the decree, saying he will continue his campaign to oust President Nicolas Maduro.

FBI harassment

Over two months into the release of Press TV anchor Marzieh Hashemi from US custody, the journalist’s ordeal is far from over. Marzieh is back in Iran, but her family members and friends are being threatened and harassed by the FBI. Earlier, we were joined by the anchor herself here in our studio. This is what she had to say.

US sanctions policy

A top US official says Washington is waging a maximum and intense pressure campaign on Iran and Venezuela. The under-secretary of the US Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence made the comments in Singapore. Sigal Mandelker is set to warn Asian countries in the coming days against trying to evade US sanctions on Iran. Earlier this week, Washington placed additional sanctions on Tehran. On Thursday, the White House also warned foreign companies to cut down on oil trade with Venezuela or face sanctions themselves. US sanctions policy has come under the spotlight. Last year, it waged economic warfare on many countries, including Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and Turkey. In November, last year, a senior UN rights expert said sanctions amount to collective punishment against civilians with devastating consequences.

France protests

The French government's tactics in dealing with the Yellow Vest protest movement continue to spark major controversy. The latest outcry is over undercover French police posing as Yellow Vest demonstrators, which many say undermines France's democracy. Ramin Mazaheri has more from Paris.
