US Afghanistan airstrike

The UN says an American airstrike in Afghanistan has killed up to 23 civilians and injured 17 others, mostly women and children. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, said the airstrike was conducted while Afghan forces were carrying out an operation against the Taliban in Garmser district of Helmand province. Provincial authorities provided different figures, reporting that the air raid killed 30 civilians along with 16 Taliban militants. According to UNAMA, the conflict in Afghanistan caused more than 2,700 civilian deaths, between January first and September 30th of 2018.

Anti-G20 summit protest

In Argentina, people have taken to the streets of the capital Buenos Aires to denounce their country’s hosting of the G20 summit. The demonstrators marched through the streets leading to the congress building. They held signs and chanted anti-government slogans. The protesters said it is NOT time to host such a summit as Argentina is wrestling with an ailing economy. They slammed their government as fascist, saying the G20 summit will not help it tackle the country’s economic hardships.

Inter-Korean railway

A train has traveled from South Korea across the heavily guarded demilitarized zone into North Korea for the first time in more than a decade. The six-carriage train is transporting 28 South Koreans, including railway engineers and other personnel. It also carries 55 tons of fuel and an electricity generator. The journey is part of a landmark joint field study to reconnect railway tracks between the two countries. Linking up the railway systems was one of the agreements made earlier this year in a key meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and the South's President Moon Jae-in. Before the division of the Korean Peninsula in 1948, there were two railway lines linking the North to the South.

US Syria massacre

The US-led coalition has launched a new deadly airstrike on eastern Syria. The attack targeted Shafa village in Dayr al-Zawr province. More than 30 people have been killed in the attack, most of them women and children. Dozens of people have lost their lives in Dayr al-Zawr this month due to US-led bombardments. Most of the urban areas in the province are controlled by the Syrian government, but there are also small pockets of Daesh presence there. The United States and its allies have been criticized for heavy civilian casualties caused by their airstrikes in Syria and Iraq. The attacks have been going on since 2014. Activists and witnesses put the death toll at thousands, with the UN and rights groups calling for accountability.

Belgium protest

Protesters have hit the streets of the Belgium capital Brussels to voice their anger at high taxes and living costs. Belgian police fired water-cannon in central Brussels to disperse the protesters. The demonstrators responded with hurling rocks and firecrackers. They called on the government to resign. Police said about 60 people were arrested before the violence. The Brussels’ protest has been inspired by France's yellow vest anti-tax movement. The movement is against increases in fuel duty imposed by President Emmanuel Macron's government.

Ukraine-Russia tensions

Ukraine has restricted entry of Russian citizens into its territory as part of the country’s anti-Moscow measures following last week’s confrontation off the coast of Crimea. The Ukrainian border service has banned Russian adult men between the ages of 16 and 60 from entering Ukraine. Kiev says it is considering what it calls mirror action against Moscow. The decision follows a martial law suggested by President Petro Poroshenko, citing fears that Russia was planning a full scale invasion against Kiev. Last week, Russia seized three Ukrainian ships along with 24 sailors. Moscow said the vessels had illegally entered the Russian territorial waters. Kiev, however, said the ships had a right to pass freely in the area under international law.
