War on Yemen

The United Nations has sounded the alarm over a sharp decrease of food imports to Yemen due to insecurity in Hudaydah port. The spokesman for the World Food Program says any disruptions to the port operations would hamper humanitarian efforts to prevent famine in the country. Verhoosel added that if the situation persisted or further deteriorated, it would have a drastic impact on food availability and prices in the markets. Saudi-backed forces have launched a major offensive to take control of the Red Sea port. The UN estimates that 70 percent of all imports come through Hudaydah.

Russia-Ukraine tension

Ukraine has warned of the threat of a full-scale war with Russia, following what it called Moscow’s “dramatic military buildup at the border”. Poroshenko also claimed that numbers of Russian troops in Crimea have tripled since the peninsula joined Russia in 2014. Kiev has imposed martial law on border areas despite a warning from the Russian president, who expressed serious concern over the move. The decision came a day after Russia seized three Ukrainian navy ships in the Kerch Strait for illegal entrance into waters off the Crimea Peninsula. Meanwhile, several senior European politicians have raised the possibility of new anti-Russia sanctions over the tensions.

US-China trade row

A White House economic adviser says there is a possibility that China and the United States would reach a deal on trade. Larry Kudlow added, however, that there are issues such as intellectual property theft and forced technology transfer, which need to be resolved. He stressed that Donald Trump is prepared to hike tariffs on Chinese imports if he does not reach a breakthrough in an upcoming meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping. Kudlow said the White House has been disappointed so far with the way Beijing has responded to issues relating to trade. Meanwhile, a spokesman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Beijing is willing to resolve trade issues with Washington.

Iran-EU ties

Iran and the European Union have agreed to continue their cooperation to keep the 2015 nuclear deal alive following a two-day conference in the Belgian capital. After a meeting between EU’s Foreign Policy Chief and the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, the two expressed commitment to safeguarding the nuclear accord. Federica Mogherini said both Tehran and Brussels are determined to preserve the nuclear accord as a matter of respecting international agreements and for European and regional security. In a joint final statement, the two sides also agreed on the continuity and expansion of peaceful nuclear cooperation under the agreement. This comes after the third EU-Iran Seminar on International Nuclear Cooperation which was held on November 26 and 27.

GM job cuts

The US president has threatened to cut subsidies for General Motors after the carmaker announced job cuts in North America. Donald Trump says the decision would affect all GM vehicles, including electric models. Trump says he is very disappointed with America’s largest carmaker and its chief executive. He says instead of shuttering facilities in the US, General Motors should consider closing its production plants in Mexico and China. GM shares have declined 2.6 percent after Trump's statements. The carmaker has announced that five plants will be closed in the US and Canada by the end of next year. The move will result in 14,000 workers losing their jobs or being reassigned to other plants.

UN Yemen resolution

The United States has asked the UN Security Council to put on hold a draft resolution that aims to take action on Yemen’s humanitarian crisis. The US mission says it wants to take into account, the results of the upcoming peace talks on Yemen, in order to offer comments to the draft resolution. UN diplomats say they do not expect a vote on the draft text this week, because of the US reluctance to pressure the Saudi-led coalition. Britain presented the draft text last week. Among other things, the text calls for an immediate truce in Yemen’s port city of Hudaydah. That’s the main entry point for humanitarian aid to Yemen where the population is dependent on the aid for survival.

Tensions over Ukraine

US President Donald Trump says he may cancel his scheduled meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin because of Moscow’s maritime clash with Ukraine. Trump said he is awaiting a full report from his national security team about Russia’s capture of three Ukrainian naval ships and their crew. He said he does not like that kind of aggression and that the report will be very determinative. The US president is due to meet Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, which convenes on Friday and Saturday. On November 25, Russia seized three Ukrainian navy ships in the Kerch Strait for illegal entrance into waters off the Crimea Peninsula. But Kiev condemned the move and accused Moscow of aggression.

Rising CO2 emissions

A United Nations study has revealed the first rise in CO2 emissions in four years. The emissions gap report cites economic growth and lack of national measures as main reasons for the hike. It criticizes several countries including the US and Saudi Arabia for failing to meet their nationally determined contributions. The report also scolds insufficient global efforts to deal with the exacerbating circumstances. The study highlights the importance of emissions peak in 2020 to achieve the temperature targets in the Paris climate agreement. The US says the report aims to push delegates attending next week’s climate summit in Poland to show greater ambition in discussions over the implementation of the Paris accord.
