Iran earthquake

A six-point-four-magnitude earthquake has jolted Iran’s western province of Kermanshah. The epicenter of the quake was 17 kilometers southwest of the city of Sarpol-e Zahab. The tremor struck at a depth of seven kilometers. At least 548 people have been injured, but there have been no reports of fatalities so far. The earthquake caused brief power and water cuts in Sarpol-e Zahab and the neighboring city of Gilan-e Gharb. According to Iran’s Institute of Geophysics, twenty aftershocks followed the temblor, which was also felt in a number of other western Iranian cities including Tabriz and Oroumieh. A November 2017 earthquake killed hundreds of people in the same province.

Iran reacts to Arab League

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says the Arab League chief should stop making divisive statements under the influence of certain regional countries. Bahram Qassemi says Ahmed Aboul Gheit should not promote the policies of certain regional countries whose behavior is incompatible with the interests of Arab and Muslim countries. The Iranian diplomat says Tehran has always stood by regional countries and maintained constructive interaction with them without interfering in their affairs. Qassemi says Gheit should direct his advice to the regional countries that spend billions of dollars to buy security from extra-regional countries. On Thursday, Gheit said Iran should revise its attitude toward Arab countries and respect their territorial integrity.

Russian reaction to Ukraine

Russia says it has seized three Ukrainian naval ships after they illegally entered its territory, off the coast of the Crimean peninsula. The Russian security service says it used weapons against the ships after they ignored legitimate warnings and maneuvered dangerously. Moscow says three Ukrainian sailors have been injured, none of them critically. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called a meeting with top military officials to discuss the situation. Kiev says Moscow blocked the vessels from passing into the Sea of Azov through the Kerch Strait. The European Union and NATO have urged Russia and Ukraine to take immediate action to avoid escalation. Tensions have been high around the Black Sea since Crimea rejoined Russia following a referendum in 2014.

US confronting migrants

US forces have fired tear gas at Central American refugees near the border between Mexico and the United States. US Customs and Border Protection forces launched canisters as refugees were reaching the border. Earlier, thousands of caravan members were peacefully protesting when they were stopped by Mexican authorities, who told them to wait for permission. All crossings were temporarily closed in the Southern California area, which is the largest US-Mexico border checkpoint. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump stressed that the migrants have to stay in Mexico until their asylum claims are individually processed in US courts. Mexico says it will deport about five hundred refugees who tried to illegally cross the US border.

Saudi airstrikes against Yemen

Saudi fighter jets have attacked a house in the Yemeni province of Hajjah, killing six people and injuring three others. The Saudi war that began in March 2015 has killed over 15,000 Yemenis, most of them civilian. The war has also severely damaged Yemen’s infrastructure. Riyadh is under pressure to end the war. But it has so far defied calls to stop attacks on its neighbor.

Taliban ambush in Afghanistan

Taliban militants have killed at least 22 police officers in Western Afghanistan. The group reportedly ambushed a convoy of security forces in Farah province. The Afghan police confirmed the attack without releasing further details. Violence has recently intensified across Afghanistan despite ongoing peace talks between the Taliban and the government in Kabul. On Friday, a powerful explosion left at least 32 people dead at a mosque in eastern Khost province. Afghanistan is still gripped by bloodshed and hostility more than 17 years after the US and its allies invaded the country under the pretext of fighting terrorism.

Ukraine-Russia tensions

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has urged parliament to declare martial law following a major escalation of tensions between Kiev and Moscow in Kerch Strait. Poroshenko, however, noted that the introduction of martial law doesn’t prevent Kiev from using diplomatic and political means to protect its territory. This comes after Russia said this morning that it had seized three Ukrainian naval ships for illegally entering its territory. Kiev says Russian forces shot at the vessels, injuring six crew members. It also says that the ships had a right to pass freely over the Kerch Strait based on international law. Moscow, however, says the ships ignored warnings to stay away from the Russian territory. Tensions have been high in the area since Crimea re-joined Russia following a referendum in 2014.

US far-right violence

Media reports say right-wing violence has been on the rise across the United States, especially since President Donald Trump took office. According to a Washington Post report, attackers motivated by right-wing political ideologies have committed dozens of shootings, bombings and other acts of violence over the past decade. A third of the incidents recorded between 2010 and 2017 were committed by right-wing attackers. The report says violence by white supremacists and other far-right groups has been on the rise since Barack Obama’s presidency, but it has surged since Trump came to power in 2016. This year alone, two violent attacks by far-right sympathizers led to the death of over a dozen people in Kentucky and the city of Pittsburgh.
