Syria civilian deaths

More people are falling victim to indiscriminate airstrikes by the US-led coalition in Syria. According to Syrian media, eleven people were killed following an air raid on Sha’afa village in Dayr al-Zawr province. Attacks by the US-led coalition in eastern Syria have surged over the past week, killing a growing number of civilians. US forces are operating in Syria without a United Nations mandate or permission from Damascus.

Hudaydah ceasefire

The United Nations envoy to Yemen has urged warring sides in the port city of Hudaydah to keep the peace. Martin Griffits made the call during his visit to the flashpoint city as part of his efforts to lay the groundwork for restarting peace talks. Mohammad Al-Attab reports.

Gibraltar issue

Spain has warned that a European Council summit to finalize the divorce deal with Britain will hinge on the resolution of the thorny issue of Gibraltar. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is visiting Cuba, said the Sunday summit would very probably be cancelled without Britain agreeing to Spain’s terms. Earlier, Spanish officials said Sanchez will only attend if UK issues a statement that shares Madrid’s interpretation of the Brexit deal regarding Gibraltar. Madrid also wants a veto on relations with Gibraltar in any European Union agreement with Britain. All ratifications by the EU, including the Brexit deal, need the support of each and every member state.

Climate change cost

A new US government report warns that climate change will cost the country’s economy hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century. The report was issued by the National Climate Assessment. It also warns that the effects of climate change will get worse unless sustained efforts are taken to cut carbon emissions. According to the report, the climate change is expected to cause growing losses to American infrastructure and property and also impede the rate of economic growth over this century. The report’s findings are at odds with US President Donald Trump's consistent claims that climate change is a hoax. Trump announced the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord in June 2017.

Bahrain crackdown

Amnesty International has expressed grave concern over the Bahraini regime’s widespread pre-election crackdown on dissent. In a statement, the rights group said since 2016, Bahraini authorities have embarked on a systematic campaign to eliminate organized political opposition. It said the main target of the repression have been human rights defenders, journalists, clerics and peaceful protesters. Amnesty said, on the eve of the election, there is not one Shia political leader of national stature left who has not been detained, imprisoned or stripped of his nationality. It called on the Bahraini regime to stop the escalating crackdown. Earlier, opposition groups called for a campaign of civil disobedience during Bahrain’s parliamentary elections on Saturday.

Baghdad call for US pullout

Members of the Iraqi parliament have called for the pullout of the US troops from their country. The lawmakers say they do not see the purpose for the presence of the US soldiers in Iraq a year after the defeat of Daesh terrorist group. Press TV correspondent Ali Musawi reports.
