Saudi-led attacks on Yemen

Saudi-led coalition forces attack Yemen’s southwestern city of Ta’izz despite a recent UN-led push for a lasting peace in the war-torn country. The forces attacked positions of Ansarullah forces with different types of military hardware including tanks, mortars and machine guns. There were no reports on possible casualties. Fighting also flared up around the Red Sea port city of Hudaydah with over two dozen people reportedly killed from both Ansarullah fighters and Saudi-led troops over the past two days. For the past few months, Riyadh and its allies have been launching deadly attacks on Hudaydah which is a major lifeline for some eighty percent of Yemenis. The latest escalation came on the heels of a visit by the UN special envoy for Yemen to Riyadh where he pushed for peace talks between the two sides.

Tunisians protest planned MbS visit

Tunisians have staged a protest rally in the capital Tunis against a planned visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The protesters gathered in central Tunis, holding up banners that said the Saudi Crown Prince is a war criminal and a “child hangman”. The demonstration had been called by the journalists' union and several NGOs as well as civil society organizations. Other protests, organized by student groups, are planned for Tuesday morning in Tunis and the city of Sfax. The Saudi crown prince is scheduled to arrive in Tunisia on Tuesday, as part of a tour of several Arab countries. This is Bin Salman’s first foreign tour since Khashoggi's murder on October the second.

Ukraine martial law

The Ukrainian parliament has approved a motion by President Petro Poroshenko to declare martial law as tensions escalate between Kiev and Moscow in the Kerch Strait. A majority of lawmakers sanctioned the proposal to come into force in border regions from Wednesday. The presidential decree provides for enhanced military, security, and public enactments. Poroshenko has said the emergency measures do not prevent Kiev from using diplomatic and political means to protect its territory. Russia, however, accused Ukraine of deliberately provoking the situation. During the UN Security Council meeting, the Russian Representative expressed regret over the decision against an emergency session to discuss what Moscow calls the violation of its border with Ukraine.

MbS may face legal action in Argentina

Argentina says it is considering a request by a rights group to sue the Saudi crown prince as he prepares to attend the G20 summit in Buenos Aires. The investigation was initiated after a complaint lodged by Human Rights Watch. According to officials involved in the inquiry, the probe is centering on allegations of war crimes during the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen. The killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi and allegations of torture in Saudi Arabia are also expected to be part of the investigation. Bin Salman is expected to attend an international summit of world leaders this week in the Argentinean capital Buenos Aires. Argentine officials believe that it is extremely unlikely that the inquiry might produce an arrest warrant before the gathering.

Qatar-Iran flights

Qatar Airways says it is expanding operations in Iran despite the ongoing US sanctions against Tehran. The company issues a statement, saying it will begin twice-weekly flights to the central city of Isfahan in February 2019. It will also increase existing services to the southern city of Shiraz and the capital Tehran from January. The chief executive of the Qatar Airways group says these latest launches are further evidence of the carrier’s commitment to Iran. While re-imposing sanctions on Iran, the United States warned that it would punish any entity that would do business with Iran. Some airlines including Air France, KLM and British Airways have stopped flights to Iran. Qatar Airways expansion of operations comes amid Doha’s diplomatic rift with its former Persian Gulf allies as well.
