Iran nuclear deal

The Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran has called on other signatories to the nuclear deal to do their best to keep the 2015 agreement alive. In a press conference in the Belgian Capital Brussels, Ali Akbar Salehi said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is the only deal possible under present circumstances. He warned that the situation will change if the deal collapses. Salehi added that it is in the interests of no one should the accord break down. EU energy commissioner Miguel Arias Canete for his part said the bloc is willing to go ahead with its plans despite obstacles created by the US. Salehi is in Brussels to attend the 3rd EU-Iran Seminar on International Nuclear Cooperation, which is due to be held on November 26-27.

Israeli arrests

Israeli forces have arrested dozens more Palestinians after raiding their homes for the second consecutive day in the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds. Palestinian sources say 32 members of President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah Party were detained on Monday. A day earlier, regime forces launched several pre-dawn raids and arrested a number of people, including Palestinian governor of the city, Adnan Gheith. This is the third time that Gheith is arrested in less than one month. The Israeli arrests come amid an investigation into leaks about the transfer of seized Palestinian properties to Jewish organizations. Palestinians say the move is to conceal the leaks, adding that the arrests will not prevent them from fighting against the Judaization of al-Quds.

Russia-Ukraine tensions

Russia has accused Ukraine of deliberately provoking a naval incident off the coast of Crimea. Lavrov added that the provocation was aimed at providing a pretext for the West to impose new sanctions on Moscow. Earlier, Russian troops seized three Ukrainian ships for allegedly intruding into Russia’s territorial waters. Following the incident, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko urged parliament to declare martial law. Kiev says the ships had a right to pass freely over the Kerch Strait under international law. The EU has said it will support Ukraine. France has also called on Moscow to return Ukrainian sailors it captured after seizing the vessels. Tensions have been high between Moscow and Kiev since Crimea re-joined Russia following a referendum in 2014.

Anti-Saudi sentiment

Tunisian rights groups have called for protests against a planned visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A total of 13 unions and civil society groups, among them the journalists' union, will hold a protest later on Monday in the capital Tunis. Other protests, organized by student groups, are planned for Tuesday morning in Tunis and the city of Sfax. The Saudi crown prince is to arrive in Tunisia on Tuesday, as part of a tour of several Arab countries. This is bin Salman’s first trip abroad since Khashoggi's murder on October 2.
