‘Hostile targets’ shot in Syria

Syrian military sources say the country’s air force shot down what it calls hostile targets south of the capital Damascus. The sources said the targets were over the town of Kiswah. Russian media cited a Syrian official as saying that the army downed an Israeli jet and four missiles. However, Tel Aviv rejected as bogus reports that it lost a warplane during a raid on Syria. Meanwhile, a UK-based monitoring group said Israeli warplanes bombed several areas near Damascus as well as in southern Syria. Israel has occasionally carried out airstrikes on Syria under the pretext of targeting military positions.

UK contractors killed in Afghanistan

British security contractor, G4S, says five of its employees were among ten people killed in Wednesday’s deadly attack in Afghanistan. The firm said one Briton and four Afghans were killed after an unknown number of gunmen stormed a compound in Kabul. Dozens of others sustained injuries. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack. The militant group said they launched the raid in retaliation for casualties caused by foreign forces in the provinces of Helmand and Kandahar. Afghanistan has been plagued by violence, mostly claimed by the Taliban as well as the Daesh terror group over the past years.

Crackdown on dissent in Bahrain

Amnesty International says 32 more Bahrainis have been stripped of their citizenship. In a tweet on Thursday, the rights group reminded the regime that the deprivation of nationality is a “violation of international law”. The citizenship revocations were part of a spate of convictions related to so-called terrorism charges against dissidents. Manama also handed down two death sentences and condemned dozens of defendants to life imprisonment. According to data compiled by rights groups, nearly 800 Bahrainis have had their nationalities revoked since 2012.

EU rejects Ukraine demand

European leaders have played down Ukraine’s call for more pressure on Russia following the recent escalation of tension between Kiev and Moscow. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko asked NATO members on Wednesday to send naval vessels to the Sea of Azov to support his country. The German chancellor, however, turned down the request and called on Ukraine to be sensible. Angela Merkel said the dispute should be resolved through dialog rather than military action. Kiev also asked Western governments to impose more sanctions on Moscow but the European Union did not agree to that either. On Sunday, Russia seized three Ukrainian ships along with their crew off the sea of Crimea for what it called illegal entry.
