Trump threatens Pyongyang

US President Donald Trump has called North Korea a threat to the world, calling for more pressure on Pyongyang to end its nuclear and missile programs. Trump, who is in Seoul, made the remarks during a joint press conference alongside his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in. He also warned that the US will use full range of military capabilities if necessary. The US president said Seoul and Washington will work together to counter what he called threats from Pyongyang. President Moon also said he reached an agreement with Trump to continue imposing sanctions on the North over its missile and nuclear tests. Meanwhile, protesters staged a rally in Seoul to denounce the US president’s visit to the East Asian country and his approach toward regional issues.

Kabul TV station attacked

At least two people are killed and 20 others injured as gunmen storm a private TV station in the Afghan capital of Kabul. The Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police say the attack began with an explosion at the gate of Shamshad TV station followed by gunmen who stormed in while many of the staff were inside the building. One of the attackers was killed immediately, but others managed to fight off security forces with hand grenades. The channel temporary stopped its usual broadcast following the attack.

Aussie refugee camp standoff

A prominent human rights organization has sounded the alarm about a catastrophic humanitarian situation in an Australian detention center for asylum seekers on a remote pacific island. Amnesty International described conditions in the Australian-run center on the Manus Island as a psychological war to break refugees mentally. The rights group said cruel tactics are being used to pressure the asylum seekers to move to three transit centers. Amnesty also slammed Papua New Guinea’s Supreme Court decision to reject the refugees’ call to have essential services at the camp. The leading rights advocate stressed that the move was an abhorrent attack on the right to life. Canberra is under pressure by the UN and rights groups for its controversial immigration policies.

UN urges Saudis to end Yemen blockade

The United Nations has called on Saudi Arabia to end a “catastrophic” blockade on Yemen which has further threatened millions of people facing famine-like conditions. Spokesman for the UN humanitarian office, Jens Laerke, says the blockade has disrupted the flow of humanitarian aid into Yemen, which is dealing with the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The World Health Organization has also criticized Saudi Arabia’s move to tighten its blockade on Yemen. The UN agency says the ban will hinder efforts to fight the cholera epidemic in the country. Doctors without Borders also says its humanitarian flights to the Yemeni capital Sana’a have been canceled. On Sunday, Riyadh announced shutting down all Yemen’s air, sea, and land border. In response, Yemen’s Ansarullah movement has threatened to target Saudi Arabia and UAE’s ports and airports.

Afghanistan violence

The UN has urged the Afghan government to protect people and places of worship as civilian casualties in religious attacks have sharply risen over the past two years. The UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan says Shia mosques have been the main target of rising attacks since 2015. It has recorded some 50 attacks over the past year alone. The figure is said to be nearly double the recorded figures for the previous seven years. The violence has claimed over 270 lives and left nearly 600 people injured. Less than a month ago, more than 70 people were killed at two Shia mosques in the provinces of Kabul and Ghor. Daesh claimed responsibility for both attacks.

‘Trump not welcome’

South Koreans hold a mass rally against the US president’s visit to their country, accusing him of fanning tensions with North Korea and pressuring Seoul to buy more US weapons.

Saudi anti-Iran accusation

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has dismissed the remarks of Saudi officials against Iran as baseless. The top Iranian diplomat told Iran Press news Agency that Tehran is always seeking to end confrontations in the region. Zarif called for an end to Saudi Arabia’s cruel bombardment of the people of Yemen and stressed there is no military solution to the situation in the Arab country. The Iranian Foreign Minister says Tehran is trying to encourage all parties to reach a political consensus in Yemen. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman has accused Iran of supplying Yemen’s Ansarullah with rockets and warned that Riyadh may consider Iran's action as an act of war.

Trump North Korea shift?

In a striking shift of tone, US President Donald Trump urges North Korea to “come to the table and make a deal” over its nuclear weapons.
