Daesh chemical stockpile in Syria

The Syrian army says it has discovered large quantities of chemical materials and weapons in mop-up operations in the newly-recaptured city of Dayr al-Zawr. Military officials said the weapons included booby-traps, drones, bombs, ground mines and explosive belts, which were left behind by foreign-backed terrorists. Damascus says Deash terrorists used the weapons and the chemical materials against civilians in the city. On Friday, Syrian forces and their allies took full control of Dayr al-Zawr, the last major Daesh stronghold in the country. The Takfiri group is being driven out of Syria and neighboring Iraq, losing the territories it had controlled since 2014.

Texas church shooting

At least 26 people have been killed in a shooting spree at a Baptist church in the US state of Texas. The incident happened when an armed man in black walked into the church near San Antonio shortly before noon. At least 20 people, including a two-year-old, are said to have been injured in the shooting. The attacker was found dead later in his car but it was not clear if he died of a self-inflicted gunshot or taken down by a local resident who engaged him in gunfire. Authorities confirmed the shooter was a white male in his twenties. On his twitter account, President Donald Trump, who is on an Asian tour, said he was monitoring the situation from Japan. He denounced the attack as an act of evil.

Paradise papers about UK queen

A huge leak of documents has revealed that the ultra-rich, including Britain's Queen Elizabeth’s private estate, secretly invested in offshore tax havens. According to the leaked papers, which were first reported in Britain, around 13 million dollars of the Queen's money was placed in funds held in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The money was reportedly reinvested in an array of businesses, including a controversial rent-to-buy retailer, which has been accused of exploiting the poor. US President Donald Trump's commerce secretary, Wilbur Ross, is also among those implicated. He is revealed to have a stake in a firm dealing with Russians sanctioned by the US. The new leak, dubbed the Paradise Papers, was made public by the US-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists which was also behind the 2015 release of Panama Papers.

Saudi desperate measures

Saudi Arabia has put 40 senior Yemeni Ansarullah officials on its list of terrorists, as the kingdom steps up pressure on Yemen after the country’s forces fired a missile at an international airport near the Saudi capital. Riyadh has accused the Yemeni officials of being involved in terrorist activities, setting financial rewards for any information leading to their arrest. Among the officials are Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of Ansarullah and Saleh al-Samad, head of the movement’s political council. The Saudi kingdom has announced it will pay 30 million and 20 million dollars for any information contributing to the arrest of the two officials respectively. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has tightened its blockade on Yemen, closing off all of the Arab country’s air, land and sea access routes.

Catalan five officials released

A Belgian court has released Catalonia’s dismissed President Carles Puigdemont and four of his former ministers after they turned themselves in to the Belgian police. The court granted them conditional release pending a ruling on whether to execute a European arrest warrant issued by Spain. Puigdemont and his ministers are accused of rebellion, sedition, misuse of public funds, disobedience and breach of trust following last month’s independence vote in Catalonia. The five senior officials fled to Belgium after Spain’s central government imposed direct rule on the autonomous region. Meanwhile, protesters poured onto the streets of the Spanish capital, Madrid, to express their support for Catalonia’s bid for independence.

Trump Asia tour

US president Donald Trump describes North Korea's nuclear missile program as a threat to the world, saying the era of strategic patience is over. Trump made the comments during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. Trump added that the US will stand with Japan against North Korea’s menace. For his part, the Japanese Prime minister expressed Tokyo’s support for the US policy of all options on the table regarding Pyongyang.
