Saudi isolation

A senior adviser to Iran’s Leader has called on Saudi officials not to engage themselves into self-created regional issues.

Ali Akbar Veleyati said conspiracies and sedition that Saudi Arabia is fomenting across the Arab and Islamic world every day will eventually lead to its isolation. He urged Riyadh to mind its own business and avoid interfering in other states’ internal affairs. The senior Iranian official made the remarks while on a trip to Syria to discuss bilateral issues between the two countries.

Myanmar must end 'excessive force'

The United Nations Security Council has voiced concern over Myanmar’s deadly crackdown against Rohingya Muslims, calling for an end to excessive use of military force in Rakhine state.

The UN Security Council also raised alarm about increasing number of refugees and internally displaced people in Myanmar, warning about its destabilizing impact on the region. It called for transparent investigations into human rights violations in Rakhine, urging the Myanmar government’s cooperation. The French ambassador to the UN hailed the condemnatory statement on Myanmar and described the crackdown on Rohingya Muslims as ethnic cleansing.

Paradise Papers case

Fresh revelations about tax haven secrets of the ultra-rich have provoked reaction from the European Union.

European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Pierre Moscovici has described as shocking, the huge new leak of financial documents dubbed the Paradise Papers. He says the new scandal shows once again that some companies and rich individuals are ready to do anything to avoid paying taxes. The EU official has called on all member states to immediately adopt a European tax havens blacklist, as well as other dissuasive measures. The leak contains more than thirteen million documents, mostly from one leading firm in offshore finance. Top companies, politicians and dignitaries, including Britain's Queen have been named in the Paradise Papers.

Saudi war on Yemen

Saudi Arabia has ratcheted up the rhetoric against Iran in the wake of Saturday’s Yemeni missile attack on the kingdom's capital Riyadh. While Saudi Arabia and Washington have laid the blame on Iran for the strike, Tehran has rejected the allegation warning that the kingdom's policies in the region and beyond will eventually lead to its isolation. Meanwhile, the United Nations has also voiced concern over Saudi Arabia’s move to tighten its blockade on Yemen.

US show of force

The US navy is set to stage rare war games by deploying three aircraft carriers at the same time in the western Pacific region amid tensions with North Korea.

The vessels’ accompanying warships as well as a Japanese destroyer will also be part of the drills. One of the aircraft carriers, the USS Ronald Reagan, has just ended a separate three-day exercise with Japanese and Indian warships in the Sea of Japan. The maneuvers, which come amid the US president’s Asia tour, are thought to be a show of force against North Korea. Pyongyang says its recent series of missile and nuke tests are an act of defense against the US military provocation in the region.

Texas church shooting

The US Air Force admits it could have prevented the Texas church shooting that left 26 people dead.

The Air Force says it failed to provide the National Criminal Information Center with information on Devin Kelley’s criminal records. Kelly was convicted by a military court in 2012 on charges of assault and aggravated assault on his then-wife and a child. Now, Air Force officials say in case the information was submitted, Kelly would not be allowed to purchase firearms. On Sunday, Kelly walked into a Baptist church in a small Texas town, where he opened fire on the people inside. The attack happened a month after a man fatally shot some 60 people in Las Vegas.
