Anti-US rallies

Iranians are marking the National Day of Fight against Global Arrogance with nationwide anti-US protests. In the capital Tehran, thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the former US Embassy to denounce Washington’s hostile policies towards the nation. 38 years ago on this day, Iranian students stormed the American embassy which they believed had turned into a center of espionage aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic following the country’s Islamic Revolution earlier in 1979.

Harassment in Congress

Leading US lawmakers are calling for compulsory training and other measures to prevent sexual harassment in Congress. House Speaker Paul Ryan sent lawmakers a letter on Friday urging them to undergo sexual harassment training and make it mandatory for their staff. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi also called for the passage of a law that requires anti-harassment training, enhancing anti-retaliation protections for staffers who report harassment, and streamlining dispute resolution. The measure comes following a series of news reports about women staffers and lawmakers experiencing harassment and sexual advances on the job.

Hariri resignation

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has stepped down from office. Hariri announced his resignation in a televised statement. He cited many reasons, including security situation in Lebanon for his abrupt decision. He also said that he sensed a plot being hatched to take his life. Hariri announced his resignation following his visits to Saudi Arabia. He became prime minister in 2016 after serving another term between November 2009 and June 2011. Saad Hariri is the son of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005. Hariri has also been the leader of the Future Movement party since 2005.

Catalan leader fate

The Belgian justice minister says politics will play no role over the fate of ousted Catalan leader Carlos Puigdemont after Spain issued an arrest warrant for him. Koen Geens has stressed the warrant will be a completely legal procedure, insisting that the executive power will not play any role. Geens noted that the warrant is unlike a normal international extradition. Spain has issued a European arrest warrant for Puigdemont who left for Belgium and failed to attend a court hearing in Madrid. The former president of Catalonia says he's willing to cooperate with the Belgian judiciary but slammed the Spanish justice system saying it has become politicized. He is accused of sedition, rebellion and misuse of public fund. That after Puigdemont went ahead with banned referendum on Catalonia’s independence.

Surprise resignation

Lebanese President Michel Aoun says Saad Hariri phoned him to resign as the country's prime minister from outside the country. Aoun's office issued a statement confirming Hariri’s resignation. It added that the president awaites Hariri's return to hear the circumstances of the resignation and decide on the next steps. Meanwhile, a top Lebanese politician Walid Jumblat says Hariri's resignation could adversely affect a country already under huge strain. He believes that Lebanon is too small and vulnerable to bear the economic and political burden that comes with this abrupt move.

Anger at Balfour Declaration

Pro-Palestine activists have staged a rally outside the US embassy in London to demand the British government apologize for the controversial Balfour Declaration. Thousands of demonstrators called the document issued during World War One a historic crime. The protesters expressed outrage at the suffering of Palestinians at the hands of Israel’s brutal regime. They also condemned as an open insult the recent visit of the Israeli prime minister to Britain for celebrating the 100th anniversary of the document. The ralliers said they're determined to demand compensation and called on the UK to take responsibility for its role in the pain forced upon the Palestinian nation.
