Syria retaking Raqqah

A senior adviser to the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says Syrian government forces and their allies will soon kick off an operation to liberate Raqqah. A US-backed coalition of Kurdish and Arab forces overran the city last month after months-long battle against Daesh terrorists. Ali Akbar Velayati who is on an official visit to Lebanon said Syrian government and popular forces would in the near future advance on east of the Euphrates river. Velayati also accused the US of seeking to divide Syria into two parts by deploying forces to east of the Euphrates. The advisor to Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, however, noted that Americans would again fail to achieve their objective in Syria as they had previously failed in Iraq. Velayati also held separate meetings with the leader of Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah as well as the Lebanese parliament speaker and president.

Daesh dying days

Syria has announced the full liberation of Dayr Al-Zawr city from Daesh terrorists in the country's east. Meanwhile, in neighboring Iraq, government troops score new strategic victories against the Takfiri group in their last bastion in Western Anbar province. The victories have dealt a major blow to Daesh which has effectively disappeared as an occupational force.

ICC probe into US attacks

The chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court has called for an investigation into the war crimes in Afghanistan following the US-led invasion of the country in 2001. The office of Fatou Bensouda said she would officially ask the ICC judges for an investigation warrant in the days to come. She has said an initial examination suggests war crimes and crimes against humanity did happen. It follows a related report she filed in 2016. It said US forces and CIA agents may have committed war crimes by torturing detainees in Afghanistan. The report added that the war crimes were carried out under a system of approved torture techniques, which included simulated drowning. Human Rights Watch has welcomed the possibility of holding perpetrators to account for what it called horrendous human rights abuses against Afghans.

Iran slams US nuke policy

A senior Iranian diplomat warns about the consequences of the US refusal to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty on global stability. Gholam Hossein Dehqani criticized the US for giving a no vote to a resolution on disarmament of nuclear weapons. Dehqani added that the US was not putting any pressure on Israel for possessing nuclear weapons. Washington’s unconditional support for Israel has enabled the regime to keep its military nuclear program secret. Tel Aviv has also defied international calls to join the NPT. The Zionist regime is believed to have hundreds of nuclear warheads.

US ‘war crime’ in Syria

Russia’s Defense Ministry has in a statement accused the United States of committing a war crime in Syria. The statement also said the US had placed its military base at Syria’s border with Jordan where thousands of refugees were stationed. It stressed that the US army denied the Syrian refugees’ access to humanitarian aid in the region. Washington strongly denied the accusations. The US said it provided extensive financial and operational support to aid agencies in al-Rukban area. The region is located near the shared Syria-Iraq-Jordan border and is home to both war-torn refugees and anti-government militant groups.

Iraq Arba’een security

Iraqi forces have implemented strict security measures in different parts of the country ahead of the Arba’een mourning ceremonies. Each year, millions of Muslims gather in the city of Karbala to take part in the commemorations which fall on the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third Shia Imam. Press TV’s correspondent Altaf Ahmad has more about the security measures in place ahead of the occasion.

Anti-US rallies in Iran

Iranians are marking the National Day of Fight against Global Arrogance with nationwide anti-US protests. In the capital Tehran, thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the former US Embassy to denounce Washington’s hostile policies towards the nation. 38 years ago on this day, Iranian students stormed the American embassy which they believed had turned into a center of espionage aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic following the country’s Islamic Revolution earlier in 1979.

Rohingya plight

Rohingya Muslims residing in Myanmar's violence-hit Rakhine state continue to flee into Bangladesh amid warnings by the United Nations of ethnic cleansing in the northwestern region. Thousands more Rohingya refugees have fled the government crackdown, crossing into neighboring Bangladesh. They made the journey with very little belongings after being stranded in what aid agencies describe as no-man’s land between Myanmar and Bangladesh. The UN refugee agency estimates that some 3,000 people crossed through a single border post between Wednesday and Thursday alone. Since late August, more than 600,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine state after Myanmar’s military and armed Buddhist gangs launched their assault on the minority group making it the world's most acute refugee crisis.
