At least three police officers have been shot dead during an armed confrontation with a group of unidentified terrorists at a security checkpoint in Iran's southeastern city of Kerman.

The Quds Base of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force said in a statement on Tuesday that the incident took place the previous night, when unknown gunmen clashed with members of law enforcement forces at the checkpoint set up at the entrance to Fahraj County.

The statement noted that the confrontation happened on a road connecting Fahraj to Zahedan in the neighboring province of Sistan and Baluchestan, close to the border with Pakistan.

A civilian was also caught in the crossfire between terrorists and security forces and lost their life.

Local authorities said the case is currently under investigation by security and law enforcement forces. A manhunt is also underway to capture the suspected assailants.

On December 10, an armed clash with terrorists in Sistan and Baluchestan claimed the lives of three IRGC servicemen.

The three IRGC forces were martyred in an exchange of gunfire with terrorists during an operation to protect the Iranian frontiers in Lar border region of Zahedan. They were serving in the Quds Base of the IRGC Ground Force.

Terrorist groups carrying out attacks against Iranian interests in the southeastern and southwestern parts of the country are believed to be linked to foreign intelligence services.

On October 26 last year, 10 members of Iran's law enforcement forces were killed in a terrorist attack in the Gohar Kuh district of Taftan County in the province.

The so-called Jaish al-Adl group claimed responsibility for the assault, which was one of the deadliest in the province.
