Palestinian imprisoned by Israel since childhood to be released April 11

Ahmad Manasra was detained by Israeli forces when he was just a child in 2015.

The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs says Ahmad Manasra, a Palestinian who was detained when he was just a child a decade ago, is set to be released this week.

The announcement comes as Ahmad Manasra’s father said the sentence of his son will finish on Friday.

In 2015, Israeli forces detained Ahmad, from Beit Hanina in occupied East al-Quds, when he was only 13 years old, and shot dead his 15-year-old cousin, Hassan Manasra, over an alleged stabbing attack against Israeli settlers in the settlement of Pisgat Ze'ev. Ahmad’s family has categorically dismissed the accusation.

Since his detention, Ahmad has been subjected to brutal conditions, including ruthless interrogation tactics.

Since then, his physical and psychological health has deteriorated, Palestinian sources said.

According to the sources, he is in a severe health condition and has a head injury that he sustained during a physical assault during his arrest. His imprisonment in solitary confinement for long periods also exacerbated his psychological health, leading to a diagnosis of schizophrenia because of the ill-treatment.

The UK charity Save the Children has said Palestinian minors suffer immense emotional and physical abuse in Israeli prisons.

There was a marked increase in the number of young Palestinians suffering nightmares and insomnia and having difficulty returning to normal life due to the imprisonment conditions they faced, the rights group said in a 2023 report.

There are reportedly thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli jails. Human rights organizations say Israel violates all the rights and freedoms granted to prisoners by the Geneva Convention.

Israeli jail authorities keep Palestinian prisoners under deplorable conditions, lacking proper hygienic standards. Palestinian inmates have also been subjected to systematic torture, harassment, and repression.

Hundreds of inmates, including women and minors, have been incarcerated under the practice of so-called administrative detention. Some prisoners have been held in administrative detention for up to 11 years.

Under its policy of administrative detention, the occupying regime detains Palestinians without trial or charge for up to six months, a period that can be extended an indefinite number of times.
