Ex-Israeli PM Olmert: Netanyahu inciting settler violence against Palestinians

Former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert says Benjamin Netanyahu is inciting acts of violence and vandalism, known as price tag attacks, by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their property.

Netanyahu, in his capacity as prime minister, “supports the heinous crimes committed by the Hilltop Youth in the Palestinian territories,” Olmert told Army Radio on Tuesday.

The “Hilltop Youth,” an extremist Israeli settler organization, is notorious for violent actions against Palestinians, which include shootings, arson, property destruction, and the creation of unauthorized outposts.

Members of the group have connections to right-wing political parties that shape Netanyahu's cabinet.

Olmert said Netanyahu and his regime are turning a blind eye to the settler violence against Palestinians.

Since the formation of Netanyahu's cabinet in late 2022, there has been a marked increase in assaults by illegal Israeli settlers on Palestinians, especially in the northern flank of the West Bank.

Various attacks on Palestinian property, including arson and graffiti, have become a daily occurrence throughout the occupied territories, particularly in the West Bank.

However, Israeli authorities rarely prosecute the Israeli settler assaults on Palestinians and their property and the vast majority of the files are closed due to deliberate police failure to investigate properly.

The Israeli military initiated its assault on the occupied West Bank on January 21, stating that the objective was to target the resistance fighters linked to the Jenin Battalion.

Israeli forces opened fire on a group of children in the West Bank on Sunday, killing a 14-year-old Palestinian-American boy and wounding at least two others.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the victim as Omar Mohammed Rabea, and said he was shot near the town of Turmus Aya, northeast of the city of Ramallah.

Since the beginning of the war on Gaza in October 2023, more than 944 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops and settlers, more than 7,000 others injured in the West Bank.

Last July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared that Israel’s long-standing occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal, demanding the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East al-Quds.
