Protesters rallying against Italy's new security bill clash with police
A demonstration opposing the Italian government's proposed security bill turned violent on Friday as protesters clashed with police outside the Palazzo Chigi in Rome.
Footage shows tensions escalate outside the prime minister's official residence. Riot police can be seen pushing protesters back and hitting them with batons as they surged forward, ignited flares and hurled objects.
The protest was called by labour unions and left-wing movements that oppose the bill. A similar protest also took place in Naples, where demonstrators reportedly burned NATO and EU flags.
Among its provisions, the decree introduces severe penalties and imprisonment for acts of civil disobedience or peaceful resistance. Additionally, it grants special legal protections to police and military personnel.
The Italian government has approved the security bill and it is now awaiting Senate approval.
