The US attack on a wedding party in southern Iran is the latest chapter in a decades-long history of such deliberate strikes – from Afghanistan to Iraq and now Iran – that have killed hundreds of civilians and turned moments of celebration into grief and mourning.

The Iraqi government has firmly rejected a proposal by the United States to keep a contingent of coalition forces in the country beyond the September 30 deadline.
