The Gaza-based resistance movement Hamas has strongly condemned the assassination of its political bureau member Ismail Barhoum in an Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital, calling it yet another addition to the Israeli regime’s “record of terrorism.”
The statement came after Israeli forces targeted the emergency department of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, where Barhoum was receiving medical treatment.
Hamas denounced the attack as a crime added to the “occupation’s extensive record of terrorism, violating sanctities, lives, and health facilities.”
The movement said the strike, along with the Israeli regime's continued systematic targeting of Palestinian civilians and leaders, reflects Tel Aviv's “disregard for all international conventions.”
It also condemned the bombing of the hospital as “a severe escalation in Zionist war crimes” and a blatant violation of international law.
Hamas paid tribute to Barhoum, describing him as one of the “symbols of Islamic and da'wa (national) work” and a foundational figure in the resistance movement Gaza.
“He spent his life serving his people, religion, and cause, faithful to Palestine and its sacred sites, sincerely committed, and actively involved in preaching, community work, and humanitarian efforts," the statement read.
Pledging commitment to the path of resistance, Hamas vowed to Allah and the Palestinian people that the blood of its leaders would continue to light the way toward liberation and return.
The movement also stressed that Israeli assassinations would not deter the resistance from pursuing its struggle.
Barhoum’s assassination marks the latest in a string of high-profile assassinations of Hamas political leaders, with five out of the 20-member political bureau assassinated in the past week alone.
Following the strike, the emergency department at Nasser Hospital was rendered completely out of service.
According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, the death toll in the Strip has surpassed 50,021, with women and children making up over 60 percent of the victims.
