Hamas politburo member assassinated in Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza

Hamas political bureau member Ismail Barhoum

Hamas political bureau member Ismail Barhoum was assassinated in an Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, marking the latest in a series of high-profile assassinations targeting the group’s political leadership.

Barhoum, who held a political non-combatant position within Hamas, is the fifth member of the 20-person political bureau to be assassinated in the past week.

The emergency department at Nasser Hospital is completely out of service following the IOF's airstrike on the building targeting Barhoum and his son.

Gaza Health Ministry has stated that the Israeli regime is attempting to obstruct the operations of these hospitals to facilitate the displacement of Palestinians.

Barhoum had been receiving treatment for injuries sustained in an earlier Israeli strike when the hospital’s men’s surgery department was directly targeted by Israeli forces.

The airstrike struck the hospital while patients, wounded civilians, and medical personnel were inside.

The attack on Nasser Hospital follows an Israeli strike earlier on Friday targeting the Palestinian-Turkish Friendship Hospital, Gaza’s only dedicated cancer treatment facility.

The hospital, located near the Netzarim corridor, had recently been reoccupied by Israeli forces.

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, the death toll in the Gaza Strip has now exceeded 50,021, with women and children accounting for more than 60% of the casualties.

Since the beginning of the Israeli genocidal campaign in Gaza, 1,394 medical staff have been killed, and 360 healthcare workers have been arrested. Among them, three doctors were executed while in Israeli custody.

Major hospitals, including Kamal Adwan, Al-Awda, and Al-Shifa, have also been subjected to Israeli raids, sieges, or direct attacks, severely crippling Gaza’s already strained healthcare infrastructure.
