Harris picks Minnesota governor Tim Walz for running mate
US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris says she picked Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, as her vice presidential running mate ahead of the November election.
Harris announced the decision in a text message to her supporters on Tuesday, saying that “Walz will join our campaign as my running mate.”
"Tim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families. I know that he will bring that same principled leadership to our campaign, and to the office of the vice president."
In a reaction to the news, President Joe Biden said in a message on X that Harris and Walz would be a "powerful voice for working people and America's great middle class."
In picking Walz, Biden said, Harris “has made a great decision.”
Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker who worked extensively with Watz in Congress, said “to characterize him as left is so unreal.” She said Walz "is right down the middle.”
Walz himself called his naming the "honor of a lifetime.”
Donald Trump's campaign also reacted to Harris' choice of Minnesota Governor, describing him as a "dangerously liberal extremist" seeking to impose California values on the nation.
The Republican nominee and former president has picked Ohio senator JD Vance as his running mate.
According to the latest presidential poll by the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Harris is leading Trump nationally by three percentage points — 46 to 43 — compared to a four-point lead for Trump over Biden in January.
