Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will “go down in history” as a “genocide perpetrator.”

Petro in a post on X on Sunday compared Netanyahu with Nazis as the two leaders continue their social media feud after a diplomatic fallout resulting from Israel’s genocidal war campaign against the Gaza Strip.

“Mr Netanyahu, you will go down in history as a genocidaire. Dropping bombs on thousands of innocent children, women, and elderly people does not make you a hero,” he wrote.

Señor Netanyahu, pasará usted a la historia como un genocida. Lanzar bombas sobre miles de niños y niñas, mujeres y ancianos inocentes no lo hace a usted un héroe. Queda usted al lado de quienes mataron millones de judíos en Europa.

“You remain alongside those who murdered millions of Jews in Europe. Genocide, whether it is related to religion or not, is genocide. At least stop the onslaught that is continuing,” he added.

This comes after Netanyahu called Petro “an anti-Semitic supporter of Hamas,” following the Colombian leader’s call for the Israeli prime minister’s arrest in connection to the killing of Palestinians in Gaza.

On Friday, Petro urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, citing Israel’s actions in Gaza, which have resulted in the killing of nearly 35,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

Earlier this month, the Colombian president also announced that his country was cutting diplomatic ties with the Israeli regime over the latter’s ongoing genocidal war against the Gaza Strip.

“And we here in front of you, the government of change, the president of the republic informs that tomorrow diplomatic relations with the Israeli regime will be cut,” he said at the time.

“If Palestine dies, humanity dies and we will not let it die as we will not let humanity die,” Petro added.

The Colombian president halted Israeli arms deals in February following a lethal assault by the regime’s military on Gaza residents seeking humanitarian assistance, denouncing the incident as “genocide” reminiscent of the Holocaust.

Colombia and Israel have experienced heightened tensions in the aftermath of the Gaza war in October. Ambassador Margarita Manjarrez returned to Colombia on November 8 last year, following her summons for consultations by the president.
