Trump needs treatment for ‘delusions’ about Strait of Hormuz: Iran deputy FM
A senior Iranian diplomat says US President Donald Trump’s claim of ownership of the Strait of Hormuz reflects his “delusion” and a distorted perception of reality.
In a post on his X account on Friday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi uploaded a screenshot of Trump’s Truth Social post in which he claimed the Strait of Hormuz as a US territory.
"Schizophrenia is a complex and acute psychotic disorder characterized by disturbances in thinking and a distorted perception of reality," he wrote.
He added that "hallucinations and delusions" are among the most common symptoms of the disease.
"Psychologists recommend that people suffering from schizophrenia be kept under round-the-clock supervision and receive treatment," he added.
Gharibabadi’s post came after Trump once again published an image of a map of the Strait of Hormuz on Truth Social in which the waterway is designated as “New US Territory.”
In the image, the Strait of Hormuz is listed alongside territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands.
The US President first floated the idea of treating the strait as American territory in mid August after all his attempts to open the strategic waterway failed.
On Thursday, Trump repeated the disputed claim that the US is "in control" of the Strait of Hormuz and continues its blockade of Iranian ports.
Iran restricted transit through the Strait of Hormuz in response to the illegal US-Israeli aggression on the country that began on February 28 and came to a halt under a ceasefire on April 8.
On June 17, Tehran and Washington signed the Pakistan-brokered Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), whose Article 5 places responsibility for reopening and managing the strait squarely in Iran’s hands.
However, the US attempted to undermine Iran’s sovereignty over the vital global energy chokepoint by establishing an unsafe corridor near the Omani shores. The US also resumed its aerial assaults on Iran and imposed a naval blockade of the country in violation of the war-ending deal.
The unlawful US measures prompted Iran to re-impose restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz.
The Islamic Republic has stressed that the reopening of the critical waterway depends on US compliance with its obligations under the MoU.
