Italy anti-NATO protests

Thousands of Italians hold rallies against NATO and the continued western arms supplies to Ukraine.

Conflict in Sudan

The UN Security Council calls on the warring factions in Sudan to immediately end hostilities, amid persisting fighting in the capital Khartoum. The 15-member body is calling for a permanent ceasefire arrangement and humanitarian access in the country. The council says the parties to the conflict should resume talks for a lasting political settlement. This comes as talks for extension of ceasefire collapsed. Residents of the flashpoint cities of Khartoum and Omdurman say the army has resumed air strikes and has intensified artillery shelling of areas controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Seven weeks of warfare between the two sides has devastated parts of central Khartoum. The conflict has also displaced 1.2mn people inside Sudan and forced nearly 400,000 others to flee to neighboring countries.

India train tragedy

Rescue workers in India are now racing against time to find survivors following a train collision that caused hundreds of casualties. According to local officials, hundreds of ambulances have been sent to the scene of Friday’s accident in the eastern state of Odisha. Many army personnel have also been mobilized to help in rescue efforts. The death toll has surged to around 290. Rescuers, however, expect the number of fatalities to rise further, since many people are stranded under upturned carriages. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown but it happened when a passenger train derailed and plowed into two other trains. The collision has renewed calls in the world’s most populous nation for railway safety standards as it has a long history of train crashes.
