Iran ICJ lawsuit

The UN’s top court says the United States has violated international law by freezing some Iranian assets. The international court of justice said Washington’s seizure of funds belonging to several Iranian individuals and companies was 'manifestly unreasonable'. The Hague-based court, however, said it had no jurisdiction over Iran’s central bank case. Meantime, Iran’s foreign ministry said the verdict of the ICJ once again shows the legitimacy of Iran's positions and the illegal behavior of the United States. Iran took the US to the ICJ in 2016 after the top American court ordered some 2-billion dollars in Iranian assets to be frozen and be given to survivors and relatives of attacks blamed on Iran. Tehran categorically denies the allegations. It says the seizure is illegal and is in breach of the 1955 Treaty of Amity with the US, signed before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Attacks on US bases

Despite earlier denials, the US has finally admitted that six of its troops suffered traumatic brain injuries in recent attacks on its illegal bases in Syria. The Pentagon said four service members suffered brain injuries at a base near the Syrian city of Hasakah during a drone attack on March 23. Two others suffered injuries in an attack on March 24. The attacks also killed an American contractor and injured another. The disclosure raises the human toll from last week’s strikes and counter-strikes in Syria to a total of 12. The US bases in Syria have been targeted by numerous drone and rocket attacks. Washington claims its military presence in Syria is aimed at fighting the Daesh terror group. Syria has frequently called for an end to US occupation of its territory.

US gun violence

More than a thousand people have attended a protest organized by local mothers in the US state of Tennessee. The rally followed a recent deadly school shooting in the state capital city of Nashville. Demonstrators flooded the Tennessee State Capitol to call for an end to gun violence and demand stricter gun control laws. They carried placards reading "No More Silence" and "We have to do better.” A large number of students also attended the protest rally, expressing their clear concern about the safety of US schools. They urged lawmakers to take measures to make it more difficult for people who could be potential threats to get a gun.
