Asian Wrestling Championships: Iran GR Team finish 2nd despite winning 4 gold
Iran’s Greco Roman team have fallen short of lifting the title at the Asian Championships, despite an impressive second day in Mongolia, which saw 3 Gold and one Silver Medals.
Mohammad-Reza Mokhtari grabbed Iran’s first gold of the day, in the 72kg weight-class. Mokhtari managed to beat the Kazek finalist 5-1, and claim the top spot on the podium. Then it was Rasoul Garm siri in the 82kg final, who broke from a 3-all deadlock against another Kazek, with a step-out, to take the gold.
And in the 97kg division, Mehdi Bali, who had a difficult passage to the 97kg final, dismantled Uzbekistan’s Rustam Assakalov in the first period, en route to a 5-1 win, and the gold.
Mehdi Mohsen Nejad could have won Iran’s 4th gold of the day, but he had to retire his 60kg final bout, due to a shoulder injury, and thus settled for silver.
Despite a tally of 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals, Iran’s Greco Roman team finished 2nd, on 176 points, behind Kazakhstan, who had a fewer gold count, but came up with 190 points.
