Iranian presidential candidate vows to reduce inflation to ‘below 5%’
Iranian presidential candidate Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh-Hashemi has pledged to take inflation down to below 5% if he is elected president, a reduction of 10 times.
Ghazizadeh-Hashemi, who is a Principlist, said on Sunday (May 30) that his potential administration would accomplish that goal in four years.
“We would work on curbing inflation and how [other] countries succeed in doing that for [the first] two years. High inflation is not only an issue in our country; many countries have experienced inflation and been successful in curbing it. The closest country to us is Turkey, which for two decades has experienced inflations of above 50%,” Ghazizadeh-Hashemi said, according to IRNA.
He said that, according to his plans for economic and structural reform, the inflation rate would shrink to the single-digit figure of below 5% over time.
“According to the figures published by the Central Bank,” Ghazizadeh-Hashemi said, “prices have hiked by 50%… [In my administration,] this hike will be taken down to 5%... but in the first year, we will decrease the inflation rate by half, to below 30%, and the inflation will decrease at an exponential rate until it reaches a single-digit figure.”
Iran is holding its 13th presidential election on June 18. Ghazizadeh-Hashemi is running together with six other candidates. All of them have been specially focusing on the Iranian economy, battered by sanctions and mismanagement in recent years. Some have been attacking the economic policies of the President Hassan Rouhani administration. The governor of Iran’s Central Bank, appointed to that post by Rouhani in 2018, is also running.
Ghazizadeh-Hashemi said he was representing “the Second Step” advocates, referring to the Second Step of the Revolution statement that Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei issued to the new generation in Iran in 2019.
“A generation of innovative youths is here to set in place a different way of thinking to govern the country. It’s not [just] me, we are a group of people,” he said.
