UAE port ‘explosions’

Several powerful explosions have reportedly rocked the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, leaving 7 to 10 oil tankers in flames. Media sources say the explosions occurred one after another and heard loud and clear. Witnesses confirm that American and French warplanes were flying over the port in the Sea of Oman at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, the government of Fujairah has denied the reports of explosions, insisting that the port is functioning as usual. Fujairah is the only multi-purpose port, dealing with oil and industrial products, on the eastern seaboard of the UAE.

Sudan talks

Sudan's military rulers have invited protest leaders for a new round of negotiations on transferring power to a civilian administration. The call comes as thousands of demonstrators remain camped outside the army headquarters in central Khartoum. They say they would force army generals to cede power as they forced President Omar al-Bashir from office a month ago. Talks on the protesters' key demand for a civilian-led body to oversee a four-year transition have been deadlocked for days. The military insists on holding a majority in any new ruling body. Last month, the Alliance for Freedom and Change handed the generals its proposals for a civilian-led transition. The alliance brings together protest organizers, opposition and rebel groups.

Climate change warning

The UN secretary general has called for international action to tackle climate change. Antonio Guterres made the remark while embarking on a brief South Pacific tour in New Zealand Sunday. He warned that the world is “not on track” when it comes to curbing global warming. He said things are getting worse on the ground and that international political resolve on climate change is fading. The UN chief said it was small island nations that would suffer most. His visit comes ahead of the Climate Action Summit in New York in September. The trip will also take him to Fiji, Tuvalu and Vanuatu which are under threat from rising sea levels.

Yemen withdrawal

The United Nations says the first day of the withdrawal of Yemen’s Ansarullah forces from three Red Sea ports went in accordance with established plans. The world body said its teams simultaneously monitored the ports, as Ansarullah forces left them and the UN-supervised Coast Guard took over responsibility for security. Yemen’s Ansarullah movement unilaterally began withdrawing from Hudaydah, Saleef and Ras Issa ports on Saturday. The pullout is set to take place within four days. Ansarullah says the withdrawal is an effort to kick-start the implementation of a UN-brokered ceasefire deal reached in December.
