Trump’s dubious declaration

The US president says he is ready to talk to Iran amid Washington’s economic pressure campaign against Tehran. Donald Trump, however, added that he could not rule out a military confrontation with Iran. But he expressed hope that such a confrontation will never happen. In response, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations noted that there is no guarantee that Trump won’t renege on his promise as he did in case of Tehran’s nuclear deal. Majid Takht Ravanchi added that Iran talked with the six powers, including the United States, in 2015 within the framework of the nuclear deal.

US-China trade talks

The US president says he is taking steps to authorize new tariffs on 325 billion dollars of Chinese imports. Donald Trump said the US has become a piggy bank that everybody, including China, steals from. He added that China has been able to rebuild its economy because of the revenue coming from the US. The new tariffs, which would affect computer products and clothing, come as US-China trade talks have resumed in Washington. The new US measure would effectively subject all trade between China and the US to tariffs. Apart from the new tariffs, on Friday, Washington will increase its existing tariffs on 200 billion dollars of Chinese goods to 25 percent.

France Saudi arms sales

Human rights activists have staged a protest at a French port where a Saudi vessel is set to be loaded with weapons. Two rights groups are seeking to block the cargo ship from being loaded with French arms. The move comes after leaked French military intelligence showed weapons sold to Riyadh were being used against civilians in Yemen. The arms included tanks and missile systems. On Thursday, French President, Emmanuel Macron, defended weapons sales to Saudis; saying he has obtained guarantees from Riyadh they will not be used against civilians. However, the claim has been rejected by prominent rights group Amnesty International.

Maduro slams US

The Venezuelan president has condemned the United States for what he called the criminal sabotage of his government. Nicolas Maduro made the remarks during a speech in the capital Caracas. Venezuela’s president pledged that his government will not bow to Washington’s political and economic pressure. Maduro also stressed that US threats will fail to damage the relationship between Venezuela and its allies, including Cuba. In April, US President Donald Trump threatened Havana with a full and total embargo and high-level sanctions if it continues to support Maduro’s government. Cuba, however has emphasized that any solution to Venezuela’s political situation should be achieved through dialog not sanctions.

Israel kills Palestinians

At least six Palestinians have been wounded in an Israeli attack in al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem al-Quds. Video footage shows Israeli forces firing rubber bullets, tear gas and sound grenades at Palestinian worshippers gathering at al-Aqsa mosque to mark the holy month of Ramadan. Israeli forces also detained a number of Palestinian youths after beating them up. Tens of thousands of Palestinians are expected to head to al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday.

UN warns about Yemen

The United Nations has warned that more than TEN million people in Yemen are on the brink of famine. Haq added the UN’s World Food Program aims to expand its operations in Yemen to reach 12 million people per month. The United Nations and its partners are also planning to further increase their assistance to cover 20 million Yemenis, to provide them with basic supplies. Haq noted that the plan requires more than four billion dollars, calling on donors to fully fund it as soon as possible. The UN has previously described Yemen as the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis, amid the ongoing Saudi war and blockade of the country. The war began in March 2015, killing more than 15,000 and 500 people so far. Most of those killed have been civilians.
