Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Majid Takht-e Ravanchi

Here is a brief look at Press TV Newsroom's headlines from 0900 GMT to 1700 GMT, May 10, 2019.

Iran's response to Trump’s offer

Iran’s envoy to the United Nations has responded to the US request for holding talks with the Islamic Republic on Tehran’s nuclear program. Majid Takht-e Ravanchi said Iran has been waiting for a credible and practical response from other signatories to the nuclear deal since last year’s US withdrawal from the accord. He said the International Atomic Energy Agency, in 14 reports, has confirmed Iran’s full compliance with the 2015 agreement. Iran’s UN envoy noted that Tehran is not interested in having nuclear weapons and the leader of the Islamic Republic has issued a religious decree in this regard. Takht-e Ravanchi also rejected the US allegation that there is a threat against its forces in the Middle East from Iran. He said the allegation was spread by the same people who pushed the US into the Iraq war. On Thursday, US President Donald Trump said he is ready to talk to Iran.

Trump's impeachment push

Several US advocacy groups have delivered petitions to Congress, which contain 10 million signatures calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment. Activists delivered the signatures to Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. She has introduced a bill that would direct the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether Trump committed impeachable offenses. Tlaib told a gathering at the Capitol Hill that the rule of law can no longer be ignored by the president.

Iranians back nuclear decision

Iranians have held nationwide rallies in support of the government’s decision to suspend some commitments under the nuclear deal. People from all walks of life took part in the rallies following Friday prayers to show their distrust of the US. The protests came two days after the Iranian government reduced the country’s commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal. Tehran did so a year after Washington withdrew from the accord and reinstated sanctions lifted under the deal. Iran says it will reverse the decision, if other signatories meet its demands within 60 days after it reduced commitments. Tehran’s demands include the removal of sanctions on oil exports and banking system.

Syrian army's battle against militants

The Syrian army has carried out a major operation against the Nusra Front terrorists in Hama and Idlib provinces, inflicting heavy losses on the terror group. The army says the operation was launched after the foreign-backed terrorists violated a de-escalation zone deal. Government forces also thwarted an attack on the military points in northern Hama, killing a number of the terrorists. Damascus has stepped up its operation in Hama and Idlib after repeated mortar attacks against both army and civilians. Last week, the terrorists also launched rockets at a Russian airbase near the city of Latakia. The strikes, however, were repelled. The Syrian army is in the final phase of its war against the terrorists, reclaiming most of the areas Damascus lost in recent years.

North Korean leader calls for ‘full combat posture’

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered the military to boost its strike capability a day after he directed a successful missile test. Kim stressed that the army needs to further increase the capability of the defense units to carry out combat tasks and keep full combat posture. He added that peace and security of the country can only be guaranteed by strong physical force capable of defending its sovereignty. South Korea says Pyongyang fired two short-range missiles on Thursday and a series of projectiles on Saturday. The United States has criticized the moves. Talks between Washington and Pyongyang over denuclearization have made little progress, mainly because the US refuses to lift its harsh sanctions on North Korea.
