Failed anti-Iran measures

The leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says the enemies’ pressure campaign on the Iranian nation will be futile. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the more pressure the enemies exert, the stronger the Iranian nation will become. In his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei slammed the leaders of some Arab countries for following orders by the United States and Israel. The leader made the remarks while addressing participants of the 36th international Quran competition in the capital, Tehran.

Sudan unrest

Sudanese protesters block an attempt to break up a sit-in outside the army headquarters in Khartoum amid growing calls for civilian rule. Security forces reportedly gathered on three sides of the sit-in, and tractors were preparing to remove stone and metal barricades. But the protesters joined hands and formed rings around the sit-in area to block the attempt. They began the sit-in outside the defense ministry on April 6 to put pressure on president Omar al-Bashir to resign. But the sit-in continued even after the military ousted Bashir and formed a transitional council. The protesters now want army rulers to immediately hand over power to a new civilian government. The military council has promised that the next government will be civilian, but says, it will take a maximum of two years to form it.

Boko Haram attack

Boko Haram militants have killed at least seven Chadian soldiers in an attack in the country’s east. A Chad military spokesman said the attack happened overnight in Bouhama in the Lake Chad region. 15 soldiers were also wounded in the attack. According to the army spokesman, more than 60 militants were killed after security forces returned fire. The search for other attackers is underway in the area. Boko Haram militants are mainly based in neighboring Nigeria. But the militant group carries out attacks both inside and outside Nigeria borders. More than 20,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in more than nine years of insurgency by Boko Haram in Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Slamming US accusation

China has lashed out at US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after he slammed Beijing’s policies in South America. The Chinese official also rejected Pompeo's remarks as lies. On Friday, Pompeo accused China of aiding Venezuela's economic collapse by bankrolling the government of President Nicolas Maduro. He also said China is being hypocritical by calling for non-intervention in Venezuela. The US president has recognized Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s interim leader. Donald Trump is also pressing President Maduro to step down. He has threatened to use military force to oust Maduro. China and Russia are among the countries that have warned Washington against the consequences of military action in Venezuela.

US storms

The death toll from this weekend’s severe storms in the southern US has risen to at least eight people, including three children. In the state of Texas, four people including two siblings, died in the weather-related incident. Two deaths have been reported in Louisiana while one person was killed in Mississippi. In Alabama, a county employee was struck by a vehicle while busy in a rescue effort. Nearly 90,000 households are said to be without power after the storms ravaged infrastructure in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Georgia on Sunday. The severity of storm forced the Mississippi governor to declare a state of emergency. Over 2,000 flights were canceled across the region.
