US immigration row

US President Donald Trump says he is seriously considering relocating detained migrants to the so-called sanctuary cities that oppose his tough immigration policies. Speaking at the White House, Trump also re-iterated his pledge to build a border wall with Mexico. Sanctuary cities are places where local authorities have refused to hand over undocumented immigrants for deportation. Meanwhile, mayors from across the US have responded to Trump’s comments. Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio said in a statement that Trump’s immigration policy was rooted in cruelty. In Philadelphia, Mayor Jim Kenney said that his city would be prepared to welcome these immigrants. The mayors of Oakland, California, and Maryland also voiced similar reactions.

Sudan coup

The new head of Sudan’s ruling military council says a civilian government will be formed in maximum two years after consultations are made with the opposition. In a televised address, Abdel Fattah Burhan pledged to uproot the former regime. He also promised to bring the killers of the protesters to justice. Burhan declared an end to the night-time curfew which has been in place since the army deposed former President Omar al-Bashir on Thursday. He also ordered the release of all the protesters who were jailed in the recent anti-government demonstrations. Burhan was appointed as the head of the transitional military council on Friday after the former defense minister quit the post after only one day. The protesters in Sudan are angry over the military’s seizure of power, saying they will keep up their demonstrations until a civilian government takes the helm.

Iran floods

Iranian officials have warned of new flash floods in several eastern and western provinces amid prediction of heavy downpours on Saturday. Iran’s meteorological organization predicts heavy rains, severe thunderstorm and hail in several provinces, including Boushehr, Fars, Hormozgan, Kerman and Yazd. The organization has also issued warning for the residents, asking them to take precautionary measures to deal with the possible flooding. Meanwhile, relief operations are underway in the province of Khuzestan following recent floods. They are the latest in a series of unprecedented rain-triggered floods that have hit Iran since March 19, killing at least 70 people.

US IRGC designation

The second-in-command of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has reacted to the US move to designate the IRGC as a terrorist entity, calling it a foolish decision. Brigadier General Hossein Salami said the US, itself, is a sponsor of terrorist groups. He added that Washington talks of democracy, but commits tortures throughout the world. The Iranian commander noted that the Islamic Republic has been a victim of terrorism in the past 40 years. On Monday, the Trump administration designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

France protests

In the French city of Toulouse, police forces have clashed with yellow vest protesters, who are once again staging an anti-government demonstration. Police forces used flash balls and tear gas against rock-throwing protesters. Several people got injured in the clash. A number of protesters were arrested. This is the 22nd consecutive weekend of protests across France. More demonstrations are planned in Paris and other cities. The rallies started in mid-November as a protest against President Emmanuel Macron’s planned fuel price hikes. But they snowballed into a national movement, rejecting Macron's policies and his leadership.
