Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said that the Hesse state election results are 'painful', speaking from the CDU headquarters in Berlin on Sunday.
"It is painful for the CDU that we've lost so many votes," the CDU General Secretary said, before commending "the friends in Hesse" for reaching "the big election goal - to avert a Red-Red-Green majority."
"The approval ratings on a national level are disappointing and unsatisfactory," Kramp-Karrenbauer told reporters, tracing the source of the problem back to the behavior of the two governing parties, CDU and SPD.
When asked about Angela Merkel’s plans to compete at the upcoming CDU convention as the party’s leader, she said that "the head of the party has clearly explained that she will compete again at the party convention."
