'Fake' allegations
The Russian president says allegations of chemical attacks by the Syrian government are fake news.
Vladimir Putin said the accusations are aimed at consolidating the efforts against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He stressed that the allegations of chemical attacks by the Syrian army are yet to be thoroughly investigated. The Russian president added that Moscow supports a full-scale investigation, stressing that it is a lie that his country is against an objective investigation in Syria. Syria’s deputy foreign minister has also rejected the claim that government forces use chemical weapons in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta.
Trump tariffs
The US president says the European Union would be exempted from his metal tariffs if the bloc drops its own trade barriers to American products.
Donald Trump once again threatened to slap tariffs on European-made cars if the EU fails to comply with his demands. He says the bloc has treated his country very badly on trade. Earlier, the EU's trade commissioner said Washington had not made it clear how the bloc could gain exemption from the new tariffs. On Thursday, Trump ordered steep tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. The tariffs, which will be implemented in about ten days, will not apply to Canada, Mexico and Australia. The EU has threatened to hit back with similar measures against American products.
China-US trade row
China has issued yet another warning amid a row with Washington over President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
Zhong was speaking on the sidelines of an annual parliamentary session. He said Beijing does not want a trade war with the US and will not initiate one. He, however, noted that any such action will bring disaster to global economy. Beijing has stepped up its criticism on proposed metal tariffs by Washington. China's metal industry issued the country's most explicit threat on Friday, urging the government to retaliate by targeting US coal. Beijing-Washington trade tensions have increased since Trump took office. China accounts for only a small fraction of US steel imports, but its massive industrial expansion has helped create a global glut of steel that has driven down prices.
Chemical attacks in Ghouta
Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad has rejected claims that the Arab country’s military used chemical weapons in an area near the capital Damascus, saying terrorists and their supporters should be held accountable for any such incident.
Egypt crackdown
An Egyptian court has sentenced ten Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death and five others to life in prison.
The defendants were found guilty of forming a terrorist cell to carry out attacks on Egyptian security forces. They were also convicted of seeking to attack state institutions, and disrupt public order. The developments came as Egypt has already been plagued by instability after the military ousted former President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. Since then, hundreds of activists and supporters of Muslim Brotherhood have been tried and handed jail terms or death sentences.
