Iran regional policy

Iran’s president says Saudi Arabia’s enmity toward the Islamic Republic is aimed at diverting attention from the kingdom’s failed regional policies and problems at home. During a live TV interview, Hassan Rouhani said Iran’s regional ties had generally improved. He insisted that Tehran’s policy revolved around resolving problems with regional countries through dialog, not confrontation. Rouhani said Tehran was after restoring peace and stability in the region. The Iranian president stressed that his administration heavily relied on people’s power but sought to boost its diplomatic and military power as well to counter potential threats. Rouhani also hailed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal known as the JCPOA, describing it as a major achievement.

Korean Peninsula tensions

North Korea has launched a ballistic missile following a 10-week pause in its weapons testing. The Pentagon says its initial assessment shows that the projectile was an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile that flew about one thousand kilometers before landing in the Sea of Japan. It added that the missile did not pose a threat to the Unites States, its territories or its allies. The South Korean military said it conducted a missile-firing test in response to the move by the North. Japan condemned the missile launch by the north as unacceptable.

Brexit negotiations

British newspapers have reported that the UK and the European Union have reached an agreement on a Brexit divorce bill which may help break the deadlock in the negotiations. The Daily Telegraph says Britain has agreed to a financial commitment totaling between 45 and 55 billion euros. The Financial Times says Britain has agreed to liabilities worth up to 100 billion euros. The newspaper adds, however, that the net payments over the course of several decades could fall to 50 billion euros. A deal on the divorce bill would mean that London and Brussels are likely to enter a new phase in Brexit talks at a two-day summit on the 14th and 15th of December.

North Korea new missile

North Korea says it has successfully tested a new type of inter-continental ballistic missile that can target the entire US mainland. In a statement, Pyongyang said the new missile is significantly more powerful than the previous weapon it had tested. North Korea called itself a responsible nuclear state. But, it warned that its weapons are for defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of the US threats. North Korea has, in the past months, conducted several ballistic missile tests, despite international sanctions. UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has condemned the new test, saying it’s in the clear violation of Security Council resolutions.

US-Russia tensions

The US secretary of state has vowed continued American commitment to opposing what he called Moscow’s aggression against its neighbors. Rex Tillerson said US would help Europe decrease its reliance on Russian oil and gas, accusing Moscow of “extorting European clients”. The top US diplomat noted that US sanctions against Russia would remain in place until “it helps restore peace in Ukraine”. The US and some European countries accuse Russia of having a major hand in the crisis in eastern Ukraine, an allegation denied by the Kremlin. Tillerson is set to attend a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels next week.

Bali volcano eruption

A roaring volcano on Indonesia’s Bali has forced authorities to close the island’s international airport for a third day. Mount Agung has been belching grey and white ash into the sky since last week and could erupt at any moment. The thick volcanic ash is dangerous for planes, because it makes runways slippery and can be sucked into their engines. The rumbling volcano has already grounded hundreds of flights, leaving 120,000 tourists stranded on the popular resort island. Tens of thousands of people living in the vicinity of the volcano have fled their homes. The mount’s last eruption 54 years ago killed about 1,600 people.

Iran defense capabilities

The Iranian navy has unveiled nine domestically-built pieces of military hardware as it marks the national day of the maritime force. Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said the items include smart equipment that helps boost combat readiness. Khanzadi also says anti-submarine rocket launcher and an amour vehicle are among the items put on display for the first time. According to the commander, experts have designed the conceptual model of a training warship on which 350 naval cadets can receive training.

Trump’s ‘verbal abuse’

A war of words is escalating between US Democratic lawmakers and President Trump over a debate on averting a government shutdown. In a tweet, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi warned that Trump’s “verbal abuse” will no longer be tolerated. Pelosi was reacting to a tweet by Trump in which the president accused top democrats of wanting illegal immigrants flooding into the country unchecked. The senior congresswoman criticized the president for being more interested in stunts than in addressing the needs of the American people. The harsh squabble was the consequence of a planned bipartisan meeting at the White House. Pelosi and top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer boycotted the session following Trump’s tweet. The meeting was planned to discuss a series of essential legislation, including a bill to keep the government open before the current spending authority expires on December 8.
