Israeli war rhetoric

Israel has threatened the leader of Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, saying Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah would be a target for assassination in any future war between the two sides. Israeli media quoted Ronen Manelis, the military chief’s spokesman, as saying that there would be no victory in the next war against Hezbollah, though it’s clear that Nasrallah is a target. Manelis also said Israel is engaged in a psychological and media war against Hezbollah. Israel has a history of assassinating senior figures from Hezbollah in the past years.

Syria peace talks

The United Nations says Syrian government negotiators will join the eighth round of peace talks set to kick off in the Swiss city of Geneva. UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has received a message that the pro-Damascus delegation will arrive in Geneva on Wednesday. Earlier, De Mistura said no party should come with any preconditions for the talks. Meanwhile, the Saudi-backed Syrian opposition, which is set to attend the talks, has renewed the call for the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.

Kenyatta inauguration

Uhuru Kenyatta has been sworn in as president of Kenya for a second, five-year term. Security measures have been stepped up as more than twenty heads of state and top diplomats participated in the event. This is while opposition leader, Raila Odinga, who boycotted a re-run of the presidential election, has called on his supporters to defy a police ban and stage a protest. Kenya has been in a political standoff since August when the Supreme Court annulled the election results and called for a re-run in October. Kenyatta won the re-run vote by 98 percent.

Indonesia volcano

Indonesia’s popular tourist destination of Bali is facing threats of deadly magma as the island’s Mount Agung volcano has shown clear signs of life. The country’s authorities have put alert warnings at the highest level amid fears that the volcano might erupt for the first time in 50 years.

Pope avoiding Rohingya crisis

Pope Francis has refrained from making any mention of the Rohingya and acts of violence against them that the UN has labeled as ethnic cleansing. In a keynote speech in Naypyidaw, Pope urged respect for ethnic groups without referring directly to Myanmar’s Muslim community. In his speech alongside the country’s de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, the pontiff said Myanmar suffers from civil conflict and hostilities that have created deep division. The pope’s tiptoeing around the humanitarian catastrophe came much to the dismay of Human rights activists and the violated refugees. More than six-hundred-thousand Rohingya have fled murder, rape, and torture at the hands of the Myanmar military and radical Buddhists since last August. Rights organizations have described the atrocities as crimes against humanity.

UK justice divide

New figures suggest that children from minority groups such as blacks and Asians account for 26 percent of all child arrests across England and Wales.
