Yemen plight

A ship carrying food aid has docked at Yemen’s western port of Hudaydah amid Saudi Arabia’s tight blockade. This shipment including some 25,000 tons of wheat will be offloaded early on Monday. This is the first shipment that reaches Hudaydah in three weeks. Saudi Arabia sealed Hudaydah and almost all other Yemeni ports following a retaliatory missile attack on Riyadh airport. The siege has plunged Yemen deeper into a humanitarian catastrophe. Earlier in the day, The UN children’s emergency fund once again sounded the alarm over the plight of the Yemeni kids under the Saudi kingdom’s blockade.

Iraq fighting terrorism

Iraqi military officials have achieved major gains during the second stage of an anti-terror operation in al-Jazira region in the country’s west. Iraqi forces have reportedly recaptured 175 villages, five bridges and a strategic airport in the area. The country launched the operation in al-Jazira to clear the region of the remaining Daesh terrorists. The Takfiris have fled the areas recently liberated by the Iraqi army to seek refuge in the desert region in the west of the country. Daesh has lost almost all the territories it captured in Syria and Iraq following anti-terror operations by the countries’ forces.

Pakistan protests

Thousands of people across Pakistan have taken to the streets over a controversial parliamentary bill. The rallies come a day after protests in Islamabad turned violent and left several people dead. The government has called in the army to quell new demonstrations. Our correspondent Javed Rana reports.

Talks on Syria

Syria’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed the Syrian National Dialog Congress to be held in the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi aimed at resolving the crisis in the country. In a statement, an official with the Foreign Ministry confirmed that Damascus would attend the event. The statement added that victories achieved by the Syrian army over the past months had paved the way for intra-Syrian talks. It also stressed that Syria welcomed the agreements reached during last week’s trilateral summit between Iran, Russia and Turkey in Sochi. The trio agreed to bring to the table both the Syrian government and various opposition groups willing to enter peace negotiations with Damascus.

France strike call

France’s overseas schools have been urged to stage strikes over government's planned cuts to budgets and staffing. France's biggest secondary teachers' union demanded that the strikes be held on Monday at nearly 500 schools run by the country beyond its borders. The union wants the French government to row back on scandalous cuts to schools' funding in its revised 2017 budget. President Emmanuel Macron's centrist government is on a drive to cut spending and bring France's budget deficit within the European Union limits.

US sex scandals

The US House Democratic leader has reacted to the recent flood of sexual misconduct allegations against high-profile figures in the country. Nancy Pelosi said the election of Donald Trump as the US president evoked sexual harassment allegations against powerful figures. Trump has been dogged by claims of sexual abuse for years, including a tape that surfaced during the presidential campaign last year. In the video tape, Trump is heard boasting about touching women against their will. In a most recent tweet, Trump also implicitly endorsed accused child molester, Roy Moore, in the race to fill the Alabama Senate seat.

Myanmar media crackdown

Human rights groups say Myanmar forces have abducted Rohingya reporters who had documented the atrocities of government troops against the Muslim minority. Human Rights Watch says it’s clear that Myanmar military has been systematically committing atrocities against the Rohingya as many of the community’s reporters are now absent on the ground. Another rights group named Odhikar said the Myanmar army was sabotaging the network of reporters to hide its horrific crimes against the minority group. Myanmar’s army unleashed a deadly crackdown on the Muslim community in the western Rakhine state in August. The violence led to a massive migration of the persecuted group to neighboring Bangladesh. Many, including the UN, branded the violence as ethnic cleansing.

Bali volcano eruption

Authorities in Indonesia say 100,000 people must leave the danger zone around Bali’s Agung volcano as the state of alert has been raised to its highest level. The Disaster Mitigation Agency says some 40,000 have already left the area and the figure is set to more than double. The agency said if necessary, it will forcibly evacuate those who refuse to leave the danger zone. Bali's international airport was closed early Monday after ash from the volcano reached its airspace. Hundreds of flights have been canceled with authorities saying that the airport will remain closed until Tuesday morning. Officials say a significant eruption could be imminent. More than one thousand people died the last time Mount Agung erupted in 1963.
