Zimbabwe new president

Zimbabwe’s political chapter takes a new turn as the country's former vice president is sworn in as interim president. Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was sacked by former president Robert Mugabe earlier this month, took the oath of office before thousands of supporters in a stadium on the outskirts of the capital Harare. Mnangagwa has assured Mugabe and his family of maximum security as part of a deal under which the former president was granted immunity from prosecution. The developments come after Mugabe, who was under pressure from both his own party and the army, resigned on Tuesday after nearly four decades in office.

Ukraine conflict

Clashes between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian forces have left five soldiers dead in the country’s volatile east. The Ukrainian military said the soldiers were killed during an eight-hour armed battle west of the city of Luhansk. This is the latest in a series of fighting between the army and pro-Russian militias. The two sides have been in loggerheads since 2014, when Crimea declared independence from Ukraine. A shaky ceasefire has been in place in the country’s east since 2015, but the fighting still continues in the area. The crisis has left over 10,000 people dead and many more displaced.

Egypt terror attack

A bombing and a gun attack have left at least 85 people dead and scores of others injured at a mosque in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The attackers detonated their bomb at al-Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abd and then opened fire on worshippers. Ambulances were rushed to the scene of the attack to transfer the wounded to hospital. Local media say Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi convened an emergency meeting following the incident. Attacks have been on the rise in the Sinai Peninsula since the army began battling militants.

Mnangagwa vows to fight corruption

Zimbabwe’s Interim President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, says the 2018 elections will be held as scheduled. Emmerson Mnangagwa stressed that his government will exert all efforts to tackle corruption. The interim president also said he will revive Zimbabwe’s economy and boost living standards. Mnangagwa also assured his predecessor and his family of maximum security as part of a deal under which Robert Mugabe was granted immunity from prosecution. The remarks were made after Mnangagwa officially took the oath of office before thousands of his supporters.

Rohingya return deal

The United Nations Refugee Agency has sounded the alarm about the possible hazards awaiting Rohingya refugees in Myanmar amid the army’s escalating violence against the minority group. The UNHCR says conditions in Rakhine state are not safe enough to guarantee the sustainable repatriation of the Muslim refugees to their homes. Human Rights Watch has also said that there can be no return without international monitors ensuring the security of the minority group. Amnesty International has meanwhile expressed concern that the UN and the international community have been completely sidelined in this matter. On Thursday, Myanmar and Bangladesh signed an agreement for the return of Rohingya refugees to their homes. More than 600,000 Rohingya have been forced to flee Myanmar since last August. The UN has described the atrocities as ethnic cleansing.

Egypt declares three days of mourning

The Egyptian president has pledged to use brutal force against the militants who massacred a large number of worshippers in an attack in the country’s north. In a televised speech, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi promised that police will soon avenge the martyrs and restore security and stability with force. Sisi made the comments shortly after a bombing and a gun attack left at least 235 people dead and scores of others injured at a mosque in the Sinai Peninsula. Reports say 44 armed assailants were involved in the attack on the al-Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abd near el-Arish. Ambulances were also targeted while rushing the wounded to hospital. Egypt has declared three days of national mourning over the attack that’s one of the deadliest in recent memory. Attacks have been on the rise in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula since the army began battling militants there.

Israeli nukes

Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency says Israel’s nuclear arsenal is a serious threat to peace and security in the region and beyond. Reza Najafi says the Israeli regime has pushed ahead with its nuclear program in flagrant violation of international law. He slammed the West’s double standards regarding Israel and called for a complete ban on nuclear cooperation with Tel Aviv. The Iranian diplomat said Israel must be pressured into joining the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty unconditionally. He stressed that Tel Aviv’s nuclear installations must be subject to IAEA restrictions and safeguards. Israel is the sole possessor of nuclear arms in the Middle East. Estimates show the regime has stockpiled up to 300 atomic weapons.
