Anti-Israel momentum in US
A growing number of politicians in the US are turning against Israel. A Democratic Senator from New York has officially withdrawn her support from the "Israel Anti-Boycott Act" after civil rights groups condemned it for having a what they called "chilling effect" on free speech. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was one of the bill's original co-sponsors, and her withdrawal could lead other Democratic Senators and members of Congress to take a similar step. A number of Democrats have already said they are re-examining their support for the bill, which is supported by pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC. Meanwhile, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, one of the leading progressive voices within the Democratic Party, has opposed the Israel Anti-Boycott Act. Civil rights groups warn that the bill could hurt free speech.

Privatizing Afghanistan
Sixteen years after the US invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of fighting the Taliban, the south Asian country is plagued by insecurity and deadly bombings. Not only has the United States’ one trillion-dollar war failed to dislodge the militants, but it has been blamed for the rise amid what seems to be a policy vacuum on the issue of Afghanistan war, the White House is mulling over a plan to replace thousands of American soldiers in the country with private contractors. And the idea has been proposed by Erik Prince, the founder of American security firm Blackwater; a company involved in one of the most notorious episodes of the US war on Iraq in 2007 when its employees fatally shot 17 civilians in the capital Baghdad.
