Obama to unveil gun control restrictions

1. The UN Security Council calls on Iran and Saudi Arabia to maintain dialogue to reduce tensions in the region. The kingdom and some of its allies have severed relations with Tehran in the wake of attacks on Saudi missions in Iran. The 15-member council also denounced the attacks.

2. World leaders, along with the United Nations, have expressed concern over Saudi Arabia and some of its allies’ decision to cut diplomatic ties with Iran. The UK, France, China, the US, Russia and Germany called on Tehran and Riyadh to take firm steps to ease tensions and settle the row.

3. Switzerland has summoned Saudi Arabia’s charge d’affaires over the mass execution of 47 people, including prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. The Swiss foreign ministry said in a statement that mass executions may trigger confessional tensions which have already caused too many victims in the region.

4. Human rights groups and opposition politicians have denounced the UK government over removing Saudi Arabia from a list of countries to be criticized for their continued use of death penalty. They say the government's decision is aimed at safeguarding military contracts with the kingdom.

5. The US says it had warned Saudi Arabia of consequences of the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said the US condemns mass executions in any country, adding that Washington is concerned about human rights situation inside Saudi Arabia.

6. In Yemen, a woman and two children have been killed in fresh Saudi Arabia’s airstrikes in Sa’ada province. Saudi fighter jets also bombed several targets in Sana’a province. Over 7,400 Yemenis, most of them women and children, have been killed in Saudi attacks since March 2015.

7. Iraq’s Defense Ministry says the army is preparing to retake the cities of Mosul and Fallujah from the Daesh terrorists after the liberation of Ramadi. In an interview with Press TV, Brigadier General Yahya Rasoul thanked the local people for their cooperation in the fight against the Takfiris.

8. The US President has vowed to tighten the gun control restrictions amid growing shooting incidents across the country. Barack Obama said his plan is consistent with the constitutional right and would potentially save lives. Estimates show that every day about 87 people are killed in shootings in the US.
