Israeli regime forces have shot dead a 56-year-old Palestinian man at a military checkpoint near Nablus, alleging that he attempted to ram his vehicle into the soldiers manning the army post.

Local witnesses said the man, Identified as Maher al-Jabi, was speeding past a number of vehicles at the Huwara military checkpoint on Saturday when Israeli soldiers opened fire towards his car critically injuring him, Ma’an News Agency reported.

The Huwara checkpoint, a major thoroughfare for native Palestinians as well as Israeli illegal settlers, has been the site of recurring clashes in recent months.

Al-Jabi was then evacuated by Palestinian medics to the Rafidiya hospital in Nablus, where he succumbed to gunshot wounds to his  jaw and neck.

An Israeli army spokesperson has claimed that al-Jabi “rammed his car into security forces” at the military checkpoint, injuring one soldier.

It is not, however, clear whether the victim was just speeding past other vehicle due to potential frustration for his long wait at the checkpoint, or he was actually attempting to ram his vehicle at the edgy regime forces, who reportedly operate under a “shoot-to-kill” policy in response to the popular escalation of Palestinian rage against the occupiers in the West Bank.

Al-Jabi's alleged attack at the Israeli checkpoint was the second such incident to take place during the day. A Palestinian youth was also shot dead earlier for allegedly attempting to stab an Israeli police officer in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The family of the killed Palestinian youth insisted that he was suffering from mental disabilities, rejecting Israeli claims that he tried to carry out an attack.

Last week, Israeli troops shot dead a 15-year-old from the Nablus-area village of Beit Furik after he allegedly drew a knife on soldiers manning the Huwara checkpoint.
