Iraq exhumes remains of 165 victims from newly found mass graves in Tikrit
Iraq has exhumed the remains of 165 victims, massacred by ISIL, from newly found mass graves in Tikrit, Press TV reports.
The Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights says new sites of mass graves, which have been discovered inside the city of Tikrit, most probably belong to the victims of Tikrit Air Academy, formerly known as Speicher base.
“The recently found mass graves are another proof of ISIL brutality. Hundreds of young men were killed in a shameful way and were buried improperly. This shows the ugly crimes of ISIL,” Mohannad Okabi, the spokesperson for the popular mobilization forces, told the Press TV correspondent in Baghdad.
The Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights said 10 of the discovered mass graves were inside slain dictator Saddam Hussein's palace compound in the city and three of them were located out of the compound area.
According to the ministry, the remnants of the bodies were transferred to medical institutes in Baghdad to run DNA tests to identify the victims, and the results will be announced in less than a month.
Over a dozen mass graves have been discovered since the strategic city of Tikrit was liberated from the ISIL in late March, with Iraqi security sources saying that the mass graves contained the bodies of hundreds of Iraqi soldiers massacred by ISIL outside the northern city.
