The United Nations is meant to serve as a forum for peace, diplomacy, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Yet at the General Assembly, the President of the United States threatened to “annihilate” Iran if Tehran refused to accept Washington’s demands. A day later, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered a markedly different message. While rejecting any notion of surrender and accusing the United States and Israel of terrorism and attacks on civilians, he also stressed that Iran remains open to dialogue and negotiations.
