Iran: Germany's UN seat loss a 'stark rebuke' over complicity in Gaza genocide

Iran says Germany’s “irresponsible, hypocritical, and complicit stance” on war crimes committed by the US and the Israeli regime in West Asia caused the failure of the European country to secure a seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks in an X post on Friday, a day after Germany, which has served six times on the UNSC, failed to win one of the rotating seats on the world body, with Portugal and Austria receiving more votes for the two Western European spots starting in 2027.

"Germany’s failure to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council — for the first time in decades — is a stark rebuke from the international community," he said.

"It reflects growing global outrage over the German ruling establishment’s irresponsible, hypocritical, and complicit stance toward the genocide in Gaza and US-Israel’s military aggression against Iran."

Germany is Israel's second-largest supplier of arms after the United States.

Berlin supported the Tel Aviv regime during its 2023-2025 genocidal war on the Gaza Strip and refused to condemn the two illegal US-Israeli acts of aggressions against Iran in 2025 and 2026.

Baghaei said Germany, which is one of the largest suppliers of lethal weapons to the Zionist regime, has consistently justified the Israeli genocide of Palestinians.

He also highlighted shameless remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who called the brutal US-Israeli military assault against Iran the "dirty work that Israel is doing for all of us (Europe).”

"The world is changing. Nations are no longer judging governments by their lofty rhetoric about international law, but by their actual behavior. Those who choose to ignore this shift will inevitably pay a heavy diplomatic price,” Baghaei added.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who had lobbied hard for the UNSC seat, described losing out to Portugal and Austria as a "bitter defeat" and attributed part of the loss to Berlin’s steadfast support for Israel.

“The fact that Germany must always assume a special responsibility for Israel in the Middle East conflict may also have cost votes,” he said.
