Direct talks with Israel ‘blatant violation’ of Lebanon’s constitution: MP

Senior Lebanese lawmaker Hassan Fadallah

A senior Lebanese legislator has censured the upcoming direct negotiations between representatives from Lebanon and the Israeli regime, saying such talks are in “blatant violation” of the Arab country’s constitution.

The move is “a blatant violation of the (National) Pact, the constitution and Lebanese laws... and it exacerbates domestic divisions at a time when Lebanon most needs solidarity and internal unity to face Israel’s aggression,” Hassan Fadlallah, a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance, Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc, said in a statement on Saturday.

The remarks came a day after Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun said direct Lebanon-Israel negotiations would take place next week in Washington.

Meanwhile, Israel says it will not discuss a ceasefire with the Hezbollah resistance movement when it meets Lebanese officials for talks in Washington next week, as the occupying regime’s attacks on Lebanon go on.

Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors held late-night discussions on Friday to finalize arrangements for the meeting due at the State Department on Tuesday.

Israel’s ambassador, Yechiel Leiter, said the talks would mark the start of formal negotiations with the Lebanese government, despite the absence of diplomatic relations between Tel Aviv and Beirut.

He said Israel agreed to begin what he described as “formal peace negotiations” with Lebanon.

But he ruled out any discussion involving Hezbollah.

The Israeli regime targeted various areas throughout Lebanon on Wednesday, killing at least 254 people and wounding 1,165 others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

The regime has carried out numerous violations of a 2024 ceasefire deal it signed with Hezbollah, under which Tel Aviv was expected to end deadly escalations towards Lebanon that have claimed thousands of lives.

Since February 28, when Israel and the US began an unprovoked military aggression against Iran, the occupying regime has ramped up its assaults on Lebanon.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has announced that Iran was preparing a “regret-inducing” response to the renewed Israeli attacks on Lebanon, warning that any assault on Hezbollah was an assault on the Islamic Republic.

Iran has also said that a ceasefire in Lebanon is a precondition for any negotiations with the US.
