Iraqi anti-terror groups threaten action if US continues occupation, interference

The Iraqi Resistance Coordination Committee, an umbrella of six anti-terror groups, has warned that it will take action if the United States keeps occupying the country and dictating its will on the nation.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the committee blasted Washington for failing to honor its commitments under an agreement with Baghdad, which stipulates the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Iraqi territory.

It further denounced the occupation forces for violating Iraqi airspace and posing a security threat to Iraq’s stability in a “blatant violation” of the country’s sovereignty and national dignity.

The US actions in Iraq “leave us with no choice but to assume our legal and moral responsibilities in taking positions befitting the dignity of our people and their legitimate right to end the occupation, if American forces insist on maintaining their presence and imposing their will on the country,” it added.

Also in its statement, the resistance committee condemned the US interference in Iraq’s domestic affairs, saying Washington determines which political figures are allowed to assume positions in the government.

It was referring to the United States’ opposition to the return of Nouri al-Maliki, the former Iraqi prime minister, to office.

The US threatened sanctions against Iraqi individuals and institutions if Maliki took the post of prime minister.

Latest reports say the US has given Iraq’s largest parliamentary bloc until February 27 to withdraw the candidacy of Maliki, who has vowed not to step aside.

For more than two decades, Iraqi resistance groups have been pressing for an end to the presence of foreign forces in Iraq after a US-led coalition invasion of the country in a flagrant breach of international law based on false claims of the possession of weapons of mass destruction.

The US military has had roughly 2,500 troops in Iraq in what it calls an advice and assist capacity since December 2021, when Washington announced the end of the American combat role there.
