A Britain-based war monitor says Israeli occupation forces executed 41 incursions into several areas inside Syria since the beginning of February, while the ruling Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) regime maintained a “suspicious silence.”
“In a continued violation of Syrian territory and a clear breach of national sovereignty, Israeli forces have escalated their military movements in southern Syria, carrying out a series of ground incursions and aerial overflights in the Quneitra and Dara’a countryside since the beginning of February,” the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Sunday.
The monitor added that the incursions have taken place “without any response, amid a suspicious silence from the Syrian regime regarding these violations.”
As they entered Syria, Israeli forces abducted civilians, destroyed agricultural lands, and set up temporary military checkpoints deep inside Syrian territory, the observatory pointed out.
The monitoring group said the unlawful invasions have adversely affected the lives of local inhabitants, especially shepherds, farmers, and villagers residing close to the 1974 ceasefire line established between Israeli and Syrian troops after the October War (Yom Kippur War).
Following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government in early December 2024, the Israeli military has been conducting airstrikes targeting military installations, facilities, and arsenals previously operated by the Syrian army.
Israel has faced widespread criticism for ending the 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria and taking advantage of the chaos in the war-torn nation to seize territory. The UN, along with several Arab nations, condemned Israel’s actions as breaches of international law and violations of Syria’s sovereignty.
Despite the HTS’s pledges of cooperation with Tel Aviv, Israel has remained unwilling to withdraw from Syria. The two sides have been engaged in on-and-off talks to reach a “security agreement” for months, but no deal or concrete progress has been announced.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered his forces to push deeper into Syrian territory beyond the 1967-occupied Golan Heights and seize several strategic locations.
Over the past year, Israel has launched more than 600 air, drone, or artillery attacks across Syria, averaging nearly two attacks a day, according to a tally by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED).
The bulk of the Israeli attacks have been concentrated in the southern Syrian governorates of Quneitra, Dara’a, and Damascus, which account for nearly 80 percent of all recorded Israeli attacks.
